Default Rag joint advice

Hi guys, I need to replace the rag joint on my '68. Unfortunately, as you know the GM OEM (GM #7806391) is discontinued.

I don't want to use something like a borgeson universal joint, but also I'm not able to find an original part (there's only one ebay vendor, but without international shipping), so what's the best reproduction option?

(or maybe... there's someone so kind to send me a good rag?)

Many thanks!

Default Rag joint

I would check with Jim Shea. He is by far the most knowledgeable with respect to steering components. That said, I think that the 67 rag joint may be the same as the 68. If it is, you can get one from Long Island Corvette Supply. You could also check with Dr. Rebuild. They used to have them in stock. Good luck. Jerry

Thanks! Yes it's the same as the 67 - early 69, but Long Island Corvette Supply does not ship international except Canada. In the meanwhile, I will contact Dr. Rebuild and Paragon for a quote.

Paragon will be your best bet for international shipping.

Some outlets sell just the rubber flex piece and you retain the other parts and replace the rubber. I think this is the best idea, if you can't find a NOS Chevy piece. But, you may have to run a copper braided ground jumper from one side of the ragjoint to the other.

The original part had steel mesh imbedded in that rubber so that electrical ground was maintained through the steering column (for the horn ground). The replacement rubbers don't have the mesh. But a simple braided jumper will get the job done.

My joint is not in good conditions, so I have preferred to substitute the entire assembly for safety reasons. Luckily for me, I've found an original one by a forum member that has shipped it to Italy, so currently I'm waiting the currier.
I've also found this thread with some good advices for the replacement procedure.

IMHO, a good choice. I usually buy the almost complete assembly $80 to $90 and reuse my flange and the original bolts. Expensive but an important component, ha!
