Default comments from other drivers

I think I am going to keep a log book of comments from other drivers whenever I take my 68 convert out on the road here in Northern VA. Today as I was sitting in traffic waiting for the light to change, a guy in a Cadillac Escalade with 20 inch custom rims and raised suspension pulled up next to me and asked "wanna race?". Best comment so far was a veiled insult about the color of the car (Rallye red). As I parked the car and walked toward the Home Depot an attractive woman about 50 years old remarked "nice little car. Too bad you didn't have more orange paint". I usually get "how much would you sell it for?" about once a month.

For some reason when I drive my X5, which is much more dependable and comfortable I get zero comments. Go figure.

Years ago, I was on patrol at about 03:30 a.m. I was following a white C3 that was going about 15 mph over the speed limit with the T-Tops removed. I flipped on the reds and blues and they pulled over to the shoulder of the highway. I walked up to the passenger side and noticed the couple was in their 40's, were smiling at each other, holding hands and they were both completely naked. The wife made a spontaneous statement that their kids were out for the weekend and this was something they always thought would be fun to do. I advised them to drive safely and have a good morning. I almost asked the husband what he was running under the hood, but was afraid he might, out of habit, jump out and show me.

Before this strung out rebuild when we daily drove the 69, it had a 73 to 79 front clip and i was really floored how many people would ask if its a 73, lucky guess or are a lot of folks savvy to that one year style,

I was also often asked in a demanding way,
"Big block, right?"
I would sometimes grin and say no, v6,
Then say of course big block, people seem to want or expect the older ones to have bbs,

Then yeah, they ask how much.

Yesterday driving to work with the top down a guy in a Cadillac was yelling at me while we were driving......."Nice Car..........What year.....etc. I yelled thanks and 1971 then sped up so I could continue concentrating on traffic.
My car is my daily driver so I get comments all the time, on the road, at gas stations, getting out of it to go to the store. All the time. But that's why we drive Corvettes right?.
When idiots ask if I want to race all I say is take it to the track. I don't street race. The life you may save is my wife or kids. Idiotic.

My '72 gets a "nice car" now and then. My early Camaros get about five times more comments.

I have never had my `76 out once where I didn't get at least one thumbs up or somebody hollering things like 'cool car!' at me. It happens even if I just drive to town to gas up. My wife and I have a little hobby farm out in the boonies near a small village and I've had the car since 2010 so it's fairly remarkable that the townsfolk are still acknowledging it. I get the Wave from most vintage and muscle car owners and some of the Harley riders too, not just other Corvette guys. I always wave back and sometimes I wave first.

I also have a 1950 flathead V8 Ford pickup in original condition. Taking it anywhere results in big smiles and waves and pics taken. Especially if our classic B&W border collie Franky is riding shotgun. He refuses to get in my Vette though. He's really scared of thunder so I'm thinking the Flowmasters are the problem.

My brother has a new Mustang GT. He gets no attention at all. He just spent over a grand putting a functional shaker hood on it and he said nobody even noticed.

I get a chuckle when they hear the rumble of the side pipes and ask "Big block?"

Yeah I always get the big block question too. Sometimes even when the hood is open. It's a good way to assess the asker's automotive knowledge.

Surly comments are usually the result of simple jealousy....

My 69 gets a lot of "nice car" and thumbs up, etc. Several women in their 50s (my age bracket) have said they had their first date, first kiss, etc in a car just like mine. Many people love the guess the year game and yell out seemingly random years to me at stop lights (71, 77, 65)

Weirdest was when guy pulls up next to me and says "I used to have a 72 Nova in high school". Still trying to figure out the connection there.

I love when they say I had one just like that back in the day. the funny thing is this is the only one like this in the worlds. but I just say that's cool. then I just move on.

I have a 68 Safari yellow big block.
All the local talent always starts with hey what year 71?
Because its yellow I guess it has to be a 1971???????

Most under 10 just go look at that car mommy.
At 10 I could have told you it was a corvette or mach1.

I guess the next comment will be..... hey mommy look at that 71

On another note... no other car I have ever owned has drawn as much attention.
Driving a corvette is like getting breast enlargements.... they are just going to stare get used to it. Don't run out for milk if you don't have the 30 minutes to spare to answer ?'s.

I almost bought a '67 convertible 396 chevelle. Great car but just another classic and will not command the attention of a vette.
The yuts see it as just another old dude car.

If you want to get a rise go to Wegman's in your vette.
Every wife's eyes are on you and every dad wishes he was that guy too as he locks his mini van.

If she's a well kept 50's, see if she wants her second kiss in a car just like it Oh Boy!!! That one slipped out.

Took the '73 out to the in-laws on Mother's day. We got quite a few looks, a couple waves and thumbs ups and a stare down from a group of college girls as we drove through MSU to get to the in-laws place just off of campus.

I can't wait to see the looks the '68 will have when she's done.

I'm amazed at the demographics my 78 s/a car attracts. Yesterday sitting outside the store waiting on my daughter, I got 4 comments from people ranging from the 16 year old who informed me I "had a sweet ride dude" to the woman in her 70's who said "that's the most beautiful car I've ever seen". I've found people aged 4 to about 17 notice it and then people 40 and up. the 20's and 30's crew don't seem to care.
I once had a 5 year old ask me if it could fly!!

I guess it's where you go and what type of crowd . I had a 69 Camaro convertible fully restored black with factory four speed . Beautiful car but I get far more positive comments with my present 72 Corvette Convertible at the cruises. My wife used to say " I thought Camaros were supposed to be so popular " ? Myself , I have a lot more fun with the Corvette. Years ago a Camaro was considered to be a grocery getter , second car for the wife . They still don't do anything for me so I sold it !

I had a 39 Ford pickup back when I was 16 that someone put an olds engine in it and didn't wire the truck . At that age I didn't know much about wiring either so I sold it for the same $100. that I paid for it . A local farmer bought it and said that he just wanted it to use off road on the farm to haul horse manure . I wonder where that truck is today !

The late Great George Jones would have posted this comment in this thread:

"I stopped off at the Quicksack
For some beer and cigarettes
The old man took my money
As he stared at my Corvette
He said, I had one just like her son
A nineteen-sixty-three
Till the man down at the
Bank took her from me

Oh, She was hotter than a two-dollar pistol
She was the fastest thing around
Long and lean, every young man's dream
She turned every head in town
She was built and fun to handle, son
I'm glad that you dropped in"

The 10 year old boy across the street saw my project on the driveway before I began taking it apart........

He walked over and said.............."Does it talk?"
