Default 1982 Brain Teaser

When we bought our 82 last December, it had numbers on the cowl. We didn't find out when/what they were until recently. Thought it would be fun to let other owners guess on them and we'll give answer next week.

I honestly do not think these numbers were factory applied. I have seen and worked on NUMEROUS 1982's and they were not on those cars I worked on...because IF they were...I would have remembered.

And then again...I could be wrong....but doubt it

Thanks for the guesses. When we got the car from VanBortels, there was a lot of paperwork with it. Other than the window sticker, we put most of the documents in a safe. After getting a lot of questions at car shows, we went and looked at the other documents. We found a Warranty Card with the same number. Since the dealer was located in the Bronx, I guess the dealer put the dealer inventory number on the cowl in case the car was stolen and stripped. So the best guess I have so far.

I guess that would work...but the owner would have to verify it with the VIN number and see if it actually was built as these numbers are 'guessing' what they are.

I still feel they were written by someone other than a factory employee. They are just too much 'in your face' and takes away from the firewall looks.

By the VIN number on the paperwork..I am not at work where I could verify the exact month...but begin built so late in the production numbers..i seriously doubt it was built in 1981.

Sure a dealer could have done anything,
Like i said before looks like a junkyard paint number they put on parts, sorry, its an eyesore,
Could be silly simple like the 48th 81 that lot had,
But i cant see it helping in a theft as a chop shop would likely do away with such an in your face number, not like etching the buyers ssi on the glass....

Dealer kept cars on the building's roof; after all, it was the Bronx; not much of a market for car cowls. It definitely is a good discussion starter at car shows. Gone back 20 years with two previous owners and they said the numbers were always there. We've got a tremendous amount of documentation with the car so previous owners must have had reasons for leaving the numbers. Original owner has passed away, so we may never know. Would have been fun to put through Bloomington Survivor evaluation!

Hum, no, about average,

Eye sore?
Yes, I find painted on dealer numbers an eye sore and would rather see a nicely detailed engine bay,
But I didn't mean that with any venom behind it, just a person taste thing,
Hey, like for example, I find FIA L88 headlights really buttfugly but also think they look sweet on a road race themed Corvette,

I see things from different perspectives....

My older Car (72) actually has a large decal that would have covered that area. I am not sure about newer cars.

Placement of the tune up sticker could vary between model years.

Hi,
The 82 AIM indicates that the "Tune-Up" label that had been on the brake/clutch housing cover for years had been moved to the underside of the left corner of the hood.
So typically the surface in that area would have been clear.
Regards,
Alan
