Default What is this?

So I took on the task of restoring my engine bay and the more I remove and research of the right way to restore it the more I scratch my head with what the previous owners have done. I've already found a peice of pvc pipe wrapped in ac insulation to seal the hood and an msd ignition box wrapped in bubble wrap with ac tape. So I'm not really sure what the two things that are mounted on the firewall are. They just lead to more infused Wiring and I'm stuck of what I should do. Rip out all the Wiring and start from scratch? Or if anyone has any tips of a way to properly put the engine bay back together the correct way. I am installing the Holley sniper kit with a serpentine belt system. I just want a clean engine bay with no extra fillers

Yes! I do have electric fans. That would make sense. It's hard to follow all the Wiring to its origins sometimes. I was thinking some kind of relay.

Hi j,
It appears there's something 'embossed' in the upper front of each of the 'boxes'. It looks a little like a wiring schematic… might that give a hint as to what they are?
Regards,
Alan

Relays, could be for fans, could be for the headlights? That is quite a mess of wires, but some wire loam may fix it easier than ripping it all out.

If it is for either fans or headlights, it likely functions better than stock, despite the appearance. If you can't trace out the wires easily, you can disconnect relays (the base should pull off, it looks like the relays are mounted to the firewall), and see what stops working.

Thanks Alan, I think finding the pics of your engine bay is what made me decide to redo it all. So thanks for the inspiration! Lots of work ahead

Hi Jp,
Having a nice looking engine bay is really a matter of time, labor, and patience.
Just getting things cleaned up is a good start.
It's one of the few things that can be accomplished without large amounts of $$$.
Regards,
Alan

They look identical to the relays I have for my electric fans, and in the same spot.

My advice is that you NOT change any wiring until you have diagnosed what all that wiring does!! You start pulling wires and 'stuff' quits working; then you REALLY have a problem.

No, you need to diagram out the wiring that you have so that you can understand it. Then you need to compare that with the 'stock' wiring diagram for your [model year] car. If you don't do that work in advance, I can assure you that you will regret it.
