Default Speedometer questions

Hi all,

I find myself needing to replace the speedometer in my 75. The needle sticks around 60-70 and takes a while to come back down to lower speeds. Anyway, first question, any opinions/experience with reproduction speedometers sold by the major vendors? Second, why are there no 75 speedometers for sale? It's a curious thing. Is the only difference between the 74 and 75 is the inclusion of KPH? I appreciate any information that you may have.

I can not help with your question, BUT , I am sure that some of the forum members can get a used speedo. You can send your speed to Willcox for repair, or remove it & someone local should be able to work on it, it might be good to take it to them like it is now, and have them ride with you to see what it is doing, call and find out first. Good luck with your repair.

I know that if my customer had this problem...the speedometer would be sent out to my gauge repair guy and NOT buy a new one. Often times it is better to service an original than buy what is being made as a reproduction now-a-days.

YES...the only visible difference that I know is that the faceplates are different.

Has the speedometer cable ever been pulled out cleaned/lubed in the last 43 years?

You don't need a "new" speedometer, just some maintenance on the original.

After wasting good money on 2 different repro speedos my advice is to absolutely get the original rebuilt. Or rebuild it yourself if you are handy.

I ended up giving up and the repros, bought an original and fixed it up myself.

I bought the replacement parts from Willcox.......it was a learning experience, to say the least!

DG,

Which parts did you buy? I have done everything on my car and I'm definitely not opposed to doing this but this is definitely new to me. I wouldn't even know where to start.

Thanks,
Bryan

The speedo is actually fairly straight forward. Once you take it apart it's obvious how it works. There's a trick in removing the speedo needle. Most people try pulling it straight off which is very hard and can bend internal parts. Instead twist it counter clockwise while gently pulling it and it comes right off.

Also, when you put the needle back on, put a piece of masking tape on it and then tap it on all the way with a small hammer. It has a beefy stop inside so you won't damage it as long as you don't whack it hard.

You will probably find the magnet is weak and needs to be re-magnetized. I posted how to DIY this not long ago. Search for "re-magnetizing speedo" and it should pop up.
