I'm so glad we talked you into it! This is the best place to learn everything there is to know about that car. I'd drive and enjoy it as-is for a while before you tear into it.
There is a tray(if it is still there) behind the seats up top to hold the rear glass. One of the coolest features of these cars, it was a must when I was searching for a Vette that it had the flat rear glass. The later cars like mine didn't pop out, but I bought the stuff to convert it before the car was even delivered.
He gave you that price so that the car would stay next-door to him. So that he gets to stay involved in the car’s life while it is your car. He wasn’t selling the car he was charging you a discount fee for the adoption…
I think you are right. He seemed pretty pretty happy that the car was going to be living next door. I'm pretty happy as well. My wife won't be happy with side pipes next to ear. Here it is on its way to its new home. Now I need for him to give me the t-tops and rear window.
Yea man,, so excited for you!! Your not going to regret it. Your going to enjoy this a lot. You can do more than you may realize , Not really too difficult to maintain,, and we'll help all we can.

Thanks, that helped which helped me find it. There is a black plastic handled lever way back in the upper part of the storage area. I pressed it down and down it came and there it was. So very cool. My neighbor came over with 2 leather bags with the T-tops in them. They are in pretty good shape. One has a small tear in it. Looks like I have all the pieces. He also said he has a bunch of parts he wants to bring over.
I want to thank everyone for their generous and expert input. Your advice made me confident in making an offer. I offered my neighbor exactly what he asked. I went from the car being over-priced to maybe it is a good deal. He is retired and a great guy. All I have to do is back it out of his garage and drive it next door and pull it in my garage. Now getting it registered, inspected etc, etc.
I don't mean to be a pain but any advice on maintenance? I believe the oil was recently changed, with new plugs, points and condensor maybe 100 miles or so. Premium or regular gas? My neighbor said he was using premium. One member pointed out an issue with the way the alternator was mounted on the bracket, do I need to do anything about that? Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks again everyone.
Congratulations, welcome to the club. Unless there is something about this car we in cyberspace aren't aware of, you did well. It won't take you long to realize that LOL.
As for maintenance, sounds like you're on track there. These cars require four wheel alignment. Ask your neighbor if he's had that done specifically, and where. Not I'd something necessarily run down to the chain store tire shop for.
You'll find that this Forum is the best resource for information regarding these cars. Be liberal with your questions, folks here are very generous with their knowledge & experiences.

I really appreciated all the advice. What a difference it made in helping me make the decision to buy the car. My neighbor commented on how much I knew. Which was all because of the just in time advice I was getting. I'll ask him about the alignment when I see him tomorrow. He asked me to come over to pick up a buch of spare parts.

I am too. Appreciate the help and the final nudge.
So now that you took my advice , you are going to have to tinker with this car. Things will go wrong or you will find little irritating things to fix. Do not jump on your neighbor because something is broken on the car. It is 51 years old and little things will come up....constantly. Just dive in and fix them.
Congratulations, it is a really nice looking car. Enjoy.
That is a really nice ride. You can fix the exhaust complaints (SO) for a few hundred dollars for a Corvette Central exhaust. Then enjoy it!
I hesitated on my 70 Z28 because it was Yellow. And I grew to love the color so much I kept it for 30 years!
The biggest issue I can see to re-do the undercar exhaust is it looks like you will have to do some fiberglass trimming (very carefully) on the fenders because some put the side exhaust on there very correctly with a vertical seam at the rear valance panel. Anything can be fixed, and a used car always needs something, so you will just have to get under there and show us pics from the backside so you can see how this was done.
The factory exhaust outlets were rectangular, and crossed that seam on both sides. I have seen the fiberglass molding pieces for sale for the outlets, and they could be fiberglassed on easily. Then the panels above cut out very carefully, and the chrome exhaust trim would cover the cut. You would not even have to repaint that area.

Beautiful car. I like white alot. I wonder if there are templates to get precise cutouts.
They look brand new, all clean and shiny. I like they way they look. Agree, need to drive it for awhile before making any changes.
Whatever you do though, make certain that your wife never burns her ankles on those side pipes.
She will remember that the rest of her life, and blame you LOL.
They do look nice on there though.
