You said it really well. Buying this car for $20k, driving it around and enjoying it, then selling it would probably net the buyer a profit.
Just going by the pictures I can't see a scenario where any buyer would be upside down in this car at $20k. The automatic is the only real detractor but the OP said he would prefer this. The description mentions the non-original components but an all original car in this shape would be how much? $30k? $35k? If you start replacing stuff on it then that's a different story. I'm also another one that doesn't like haggling. Again, from the pictures, the car appears to be worth the asking price and if it was me I would pay it and start enjoying the car.
You've indicated that the front bumper looks like it was pushed in . I'd like to get that fixed and it isn't anything I can do myself.
the windshield pics look good. have seller pull the 2 kick panels and chesk the #2 body mounts. i always say it is better to regret the car you passed on 6 months ago than to regret the car you bought 6 months ago. this is the exception to the rule. he did not look up the price-value of this car. he stuck a 20k price tag on it. and that is for his neighbor. also friend? he is doing you a favor. accept the favor. buy it. after posting pics of the body mounts.
Just left my neighbor, I think he is starting to wonder if I'm serious. Anyway, he was a good sport and took off the kicking panels and I took some photos. Good to be off work this week. How do they look? Is there anything to worry about?

They should be green primer but they are rust free. That indicates that this car was always garaged and never left out in the rain because the biggest thing Ive ever heard about T tops is that they leak. Now you have to decide if you want a car you can get in and drive for a very good price tat is chrome bumper. Whether you want to wait and see if you can find a car in the color you really desire. Whether you want a convertible or not. If you can live with the color this is a good deal by all accounts. Not all chrome bumpers were straight. Some folks have cut up a nice bumper to make it perfect and have rechromed. To me I think that after the repaint they didnt put it on straight. You may be able to loosen all the attaching brackets and shift it towards the drivers side to fix those gaps. Same with the passenger headllight door and maybe get it touched up.
Thanks for the pic. Yes, that's the thing the owner said was missing. I don't know why he just didn't replace it, he's pretty good mechanically. I've seen him work on his cars, does mostly all his own work.
You don't need it. It is there for emmisions. Don't worry about it.

Looks good to me. Car was repainted yellow. I'd be asking $28k if it was mine. Buy it.

I am pleased by your assessment. The repaint looks good up close but there are some areas of overspray. As for making some adjustments I think some of these I can do myself or just ask my neighbor for some help, like adjusting the headlight door. He said the headlights were not original to the car, I can't imagine 50 year old headlights working anyway. I'm sure he is going to want to help anyway. As far as the color, I like the sunflower yellow. The owner says is a 71 color and there were fewer ones produced. The owner seems pretty knowledgeable. He believes that ontario orange had a high production run and that one of the previous owners wanted a less common color. His opinion anyway. Also, I like the coupe, he had the t-tops off and the rear window out. I don't know where he put it but it was out. In driving it it felt like a convertible only more secure, if you get where I am going with this.
For $20K I don't see how you can go wrong. If you pass on this one, you will use it for reference when you look at others that won't look as nice.
This may be the most astute comment made yet. If you pass on this car, most likely you'll not find another this nice at this price, at least not any time soon. What you will be guaranteed to see will be cars, reaching into the upper 20's, that won't be as nice as this one. That will be a hard pill to swallow.
I want to thank everyone for their generous and expert input. Your advice made me confident in making an offer. I offered my neighbor exactly what he asked. I went from the car being over-priced to maybe it is a good deal. He is retired and a great guy. All I have to do is back it out of his garage and drive it next door and pull it in my garage. Now getting it registered, inspected etc, etc.
I don't mean to be a pain but any advice on maintenance? I believe the oil was recently changed, with new plugs, points and condensor maybe 100 miles or so. Premium or regular gas? My neighbor said he was using premium. One member pointed out an issue with the way the alternator was mounted on the bracket, do I need to do anything about that? Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks again everyone.
Sounds like you got yourself a mechanic living right next-door. One thing you need to understand. More than 90% of the time people come on here with a car and say what do you guys think of this car? We look at it and we tell him to run screaming. Don’t walk. This one is the opposite. This one is the exception that proves the rule.

For reference, here's a thread you might want to bookmark, although a 4 speed, lots of great detailed photos of a '71 350 Coupe.
He gave you that price so that the car would stay next-door to him. So that he gets to stay involved in the car’s life while it is your car. He wasn’t selling the car he was charging you a discount fee for the adoption…
Start a new thread and introduce us to your awesome new car!
Thank you, I will. I need to start taking my own pics. Most of the ones of the under carrige were from the previous owner. Gee, I said it, previous owner. I have a ton of questions so I'll need the new thread to get up to speed. Peobably need to change my name to "Sponge Larry" so soak up all the C3 expertise.
Congrats! Now enjoy it.
