I understand the 68-76 Corvette build records from St Louis were destroyed, but GM had the Allied-Vaughn Co. store dealer invoices on microfilm starting in 1977 for the St Louis plant. Thanks for the GM Heritage info. ☺
Tried to run a CarFax, but 1977 Vette's have a shorter 13 digit VIN, & CarFax requires the newer 17 digit VIN. Same problem when trying to check for titles in PA using the VIN. Florida will do a title search for $15, I'm trying to get my son to have one done.
How hard is it to get the build tag from above the fuel tank?
It would be much easier to pull the rocker sill, it's only held on by 4 screws. Then you could pull the carpet back a bit and see true paint evidence. The tank sticker will be great to have as it will confirm a special paint code but it probably won't tell you what that color was.
Btw, Be very careful with the removal of the build sheet, photograph it first before removal.
Great info!
Also, make sure it's there first.
I could see mine from underneath, and was able to retrieve it without dropping the tank (78-82 has more room). You may be able to see it if you pull the rubber gasket back from around the fuel fill port. Or you could thread a borescope up there.
My son decided to freshen the paint up, and in the process discovered a tag on the driver's side door. Is it possible this car was ordered in gray primer from the factory? They have found no other colors other than the black it was painted after the nose was modified. Only gray primer below that.

I don't know what that signifies. Perhaps the door was damaged before the car was even sold, or at any other time, and the dealer repaired it. Does the color (primer?) match on the inside of the other door?
Were you able to get your order sheet from the GM Heritage Center?

Agreed. It could even be a replacement door installed at the dealer so it would not have any paint color previous to installation.
I still say the only way to know for sure is to look under the rocker sill.
About a year ago I posted on here an identical tag. inside my passenger door, under the door panel.
Original Med Red car. All paint on the door, including the overspray under the door panel matches the original paint color.
Must have been a defect on that door at the Factory. This would not be applied by a dealer. Shows a repair to the paint was made before the car was shipped to the dealer.
The primer inside the door is different to my car, So I would assume that this door needed more work than mine.
