You Said stock right ? well When I ran At Mid Ohio The frist year I used the tires i had on the car the second year I had My Goodyear Guy look for me A set Of worn out tires with NO tread Well very Little My times were the fastest in the class for 3 years.Look for some diff tires.
Hey guys, what's cookin'? Anyone going racing? I hope to have the Vette back on track in a couple of weeks. With as much rain as we are getting around here it has been more of a waiting game for good weather. I still have plenty to do on the car but an upgrade to Toyo Proxes T1R tires are ready for testing.
I ran my '81 with Cragar soft black 8s in 17x9s the weekend before last. Best time was 76 seconds and the go-karts were getting like high 60s, so I did alright. C6s and C5s were doing EXTREMELY well if they managed to break in to the 60s. Lots of miatas in the 80s, too. Twas only a practice day, though. So I didn't pay attention to other peoples' times all that much.
I let an A-stock champion give my '81 a whirl and he managed to do 78 seconds. Made me feel good knowing that I'm obviously doing something right since he didn't hop in and beat me with my own car right off the bat.
Next event is the day before my b-day. June 24th.
Was running on Falken GR Beta 451s in 275-40-17, btw
I ran a new track in Canada called Calabogie on Monday. Its a very challenging track as almost all the turns are blind due to so many elevation changes. I'm finally getting the car to understeer by giving the rear wheels a lot of camber. I'll post some picts when i get my CD.

about 3 degrees. About 1/2 the range is on the stock cam. I had it cranked all the way in at almost 0 and cranked the cam about 1/2 way. It looked like a car with a broken bearing though. The wheel was tilting a lot.
It looks like i'm going positive in the turns, so the rear is moving around a lot. Everything is new and tight and i'm using heim jointed strut rods.
Very little play in the side yokes.
You really need to get some good picts so we can compare notes.

I was thinking the same thing. I just did not think about the camera ahead of time. The problem with the local track is that it is not a spectator track. Unless you are a corner worker the only people area is on the main straights. Everything else is off limits.
My brake system is being upgraded right now. So I hope to make the SCCA time trials next Sat.
If tire ware is an indication of how my alignment is working. My rears were at .62 neg and they are worn out about even other than some bad flat spots. I ordered two 335/35/17's
The fronts had cord showing. With the inside two inches through the cord. The 1.2 neg and 1/8th or better toe out just destroyed the front tires in a couple of hours.
I almost said the heck with racing my Vette anymore and Thursday night i went and looked at buying a year old shifter kart for a few thousand. It would be much cheaper than Vette racing
I have thought about a shifter cart but was under the impression that 5 grand was the minimum price for a beater. Let me know what you find out. I might want to do both.

I need to do something about the tendency of the car to oversteer. It sucks majorly when the back end kicks out at 80mph.
QUOTE]
I used to autoX mine back in the seventies and got rid of the understeer and didn't get into oversteer by going with the GM gymkhana sway bars, 1.125" front & 9/16" rear. Used poly bushings.

They don't have enough 125 cc shifter karts showing up at the local events anymore. So it is not worth showing up. 80 cc has so many that they have the age splits (I just hate running over some 10 year old kid with a rich daddy)
So I was going to down size. Tires last longer, but the 80's don't have 4 wheel disk brakes. You can pick up like new year or two old 80's with paddle shifters and the blue printed $1000 hot rodded motors for $2500 - $3000

how fast do the 80cc carts go? Doing 100mph in something so tiny would scare the crap out of me.
I just got into racing karts in November. I race 125cc single speed Rotax powered karts. Straight up wheel to wheel racing and on big tracks like MSR they can easily reach 100mph. Picked mine up used with only 5 hours on the motor ever for $3500 including spare parts.

They are really under powered compared to the 125's. The power to weight ratio is way down. The speed is really dependent on the track and your gearing. The Kart and driver have a minimum weight. Everybody's motors are nearly identical in power so it makes it tough to ever pass.
The speed is not scary. What will scare you is wheel to wheel contact and getting airborne
Here's a few cornering shots from Sunday's SCCA "Solo Trials" event in Oscoda MI. Solo Trials is SCCA's high speed autocross, where top speeds are expected to be approaching 95 mph as opposed to 65 for typical SCCA autocross events. These shots are both third gear sweepers, probably around 60-70 mph corners. Similar to track corner speeds, so these may be decent reference for you track-only guys.

I can see rear tire roll under. I don't see bending forces actually causing pos. rear camber.
But your does your car "push" through the turns. Which is very normal especially if you are coming in to fast and the front end pushes until some speed is scrubbed of or you can throttle induce oversteer and bring the back end around
I wouldn't call it tire roll over so much as sidewall flex from lateral loading. The tread wear doesn't roll over onto the sidewall where it shouldn't be.
My car pushes slightly at the limit through steady state cornering. Usually just a slight lift off the throttle will get the front end to bite again. I can't really use throttle induced oversteer because at those speeds with sticky tires it's hard to break the rear tires loose.
