I just uploaded Video 12 for those of you keeping up with this car.
This was just yesterday so I don't know what the problem is yet. I do plan to go pull some stuff apart in a little while & try to figure out WTF went wrong.
Do you think you will be asking your buddy to help again? I don't which was more helpful, pouring all that gas down the carb or trying to blow out a fire with his breath when the extinguisher was dead. Good thing you had a spare extinguisher.
Fwiw, I had a similar issue after a carb rebuild but my fire extinguisher worked. Btw, do you have a new extinguisher bottle yet.

I just put a different distributor in it so I knew the timing would be off & in prep for a backfire I had the extinguishers ready, just in case ya know. NEVER expected an electrical fire tho. Heck ain't that what fuses are supposed to be for?
Turns out there was nothing wrong with his. He just got freaked out & was pushing the handle not the trigger on top. I'm kinda glad he didn't spray it so that I could do it without getting it in the carb & having yet another problem. If you watch toward the end I take it outside & test it. It works, but thats why I had 2, just in case.
Boy, you have more guts than I do. I wouldn't have shown amyone that video.
Well I started makin these videos from day 1, 4 months ago when I got the car & what ever the camera records is what gets uploaded. Even the WTF moments like this one. I'm not particularly proud of this one but thats what happened so thats what got uploaded.
In my own defense, what little I have, I looked at it this mornin & it looks like the main power wire touched the block back behind the solenoid, where I couldn't see it doing it. Possibly old bad insulation on the wire. I'm gonna pull the starter in a little bit to see exactly what happened & see what needs fixed. Then go from there & try not to burn the house down.
Looks like you fried the fusible link down by the starter.
Most of us have done this one time or another.
Tell me more about this fusible link. Seems like it didn't do its job if I had a fire.
I just pulled the starter & it looks to me like the main power wire has several of the smaller wires its made from broken, from age & fatigue. All these broken wires were inside a rubber cover I couldn't see, (rubber cover is now toast) where the metal connector clamps onto the wire. So where I was starting it for a little while there was not enough wire for the power & it got HOT & caught fire.
Appears to be a fairly straight forward simple fix to cut the wire & reattach the connector but again, why didn't the fusible link do its thing? Shouldn't it have blown to prevent this?
you need to find a local car club and join it! all these problems would be pretty simple if you had someone around thats got his hands dirty on one of these cars before! good luck on your journey!
