When assembling a new cigarette lighter assembly, which way does the light bulb face? AIM just says: Allow clearance for ashtray.... I would think that on the side opposite the heater controls would be fine - ie the outside side.

It doesn't make any difference where you orient the light...as long as it doesn't interfere with other components when it is assembled. It merely lights up the recepticle for the lighter so you can see to put it (the 'hot' lighter) back in the recepticle.

I think 7T1 is right about clearing anthing else under the console plate.
On my 71 the light is located at about 1:30 o'clock looking from the top, while sitting in the seat.
