Thank you, Mike, for providing the 'broader' perspective. NCRS car preparation and judging is great for those folks who understand what it entails and know what they are doing. But, all too often, owners get enamored with the visions of $$$ resulting from an NCRS Flight Award for their car...but have no clue as to the difficulty and cost to earn that award. I appreciate your willingness to clarify that point.
After reading all this stuff you guys posted I have decided to restore the car like I want to and drive it when I want to. I don't go to car shows so it won't be judged.
Sorry to bother you guys, it won't happen again. I might have some questions along the way about restoring my car but I'll try not to bother you very often. Don't care for the sarcasm and put downs.
I've been restoring cars for 20 years just not as familiar with Corvettes.
I thought I could get some friendly advise from your forum.

GUESS NOT
The advise you got was actually quite friendly and has probably saved you quite a bit of time and money. Better you hear the other side of the coin before you restore it rather than after when it's too late. Hope you can see that.
Hi qm.
This forum intimidates the hell out of me! It's certainly no Pre war Buick forum with regards to manners and politeness, but it's the best around. The guys sure know their stuff. Good luck with the resto!
Cheers
Hi mmg,
Again, if I've ever intimidated ANYONE it certainly wasn't my intent.
I just try to answer questions based on what I've learned from both my 71, and yes, (horrors!), from the time spent at NCRS events of all types too.
Regards,
Alan
If the OP feels 'hard done by' and abused today, compare this to an unprepared owner who bring out their personally restored pride and joy to an NCRS meet expecting to automatically get a top award- only to hear that they've gone way off course and may get no award at all. It happens- I've seen it. No use bringing a baseball bat to a hockey game.
Doing it right is a nut by nut, bolt by bolt ordeal and even owning the car since new still means researching a thousand details and asking a thousand more questions. Right Alan?

When I complete my restoration on my 71 numbers match LT1 Convertible I'll post pics and you guys can pick it apart. It won't bother me at all. Many people build their cars for themselves to enjoy. Just wanted some advise on direction for the build. I got it so know I move on.

Alan, It's me that should apologise to you! You're one of the friendliest, most helpful gentlemen on the forum! It's when flame wars erupt between members that it gets a little uncomfortable, sort of like when your parents argue. Eg, I've got a lot of respect for Mike Ward and
7T1vette, so it gets uncomfortable when they "disagree"!!

Now that's good to hear.....NCRS=Not Correctly Restored Stingray....as in most C3's on the road!
Do what you want to it and enjoy!
Alan71...I always liked your strait forward answers

Hey qtr. I am in the same boat as you are, kind of. I am in the process of a body off on my 81. Fortunately my low mile Vette was about 99.5% original when I bought it, and was in good enough condition where I can tell what was coated or painted with what as I take it apart.
I have several different books plus the NCRS manual to help me along. I have absolutely no interest in judging, but I am staying as close to the original finishes as possible. For example, I was able to track down the original GM paint for my engine. I am also re-plating and re-using all my original bolts, where most people will replace them.
Bottom line is do what makes you happy. Just keep in mind what makes you happy might not make NCRS happy when it comes to a factory correct resto, that's pretty much what people here have been trying to tell you.
I learned a hell of a lot as I have gone along. Don't hesiate to PM me if there is anything I can help you with.
