Hey qtr. I am in the same boat as you are, kind of. I am in the process of a body off on my 81. Fortunately my low mile Vette was about 99.5% original when I bought it, and was in good enough condition where I can tell what was coated or painted with what as I take it apart.
I have several different books plus the NCRS manual to help me along. I have absolutely no interest in judging, but I am staying as close to the original finishes as possible. For example, I was able to track down the original GM paint for my engine. I am also re-plating and re-using all my original bolts, where most people will replace them.
Bottom line is do what makes you happy. Just keep in mind what makes you happy might not make NCRS happy when it comes to a factory correct resto, that's pretty much what people here have been trying to tell you.
I learned a hell of a lot as I have gone along. Don't hesiate to PM me if there is anything I can help you with.
Thank you and I agree 100%. Good luck with your build
Hi JLinNY,
If you're car is as you describe, and you're restoring it in the manner you describe, I believe you'd be pleasantly surprised how well it would do in Flight Judging.
Regards,
Alan
And, I will graciously concede that honor to Mr. Ward. I have no desire for such an 'achievement'.
Thanks very much, and I do acknowledge your contribution to helping me win it. I figure an average of one bashing post per month from you should do it.
I'm under the Impression that the vast majority on this forum are the type that retore a car the way they want it to be and not to the NCRS or any other Judged specs. Its not all that often that a specific restoration question comes along here. Probably because those questions can be better answered on a NCRS site and everybody here knows it. How ever when one sez that they are going to have a car Judged, those here have a pretty good idea that the end result isn't going to go that well if one dosn't follow there guide lines.

That's pretty much it- and if someone answers with blatantly incorrect info that would send the OP way off in the wrong direction, I see nothing wrong with setting the record straight.

Hi Alan,
I am going out of my way to keep every finish as it was from the factory. I am going to keep all markings when I can, and duplicate the ones that get erased.
On the other hand, I am doing things like adding stainless lines for fuel and brakes (going to keep the originals of course). I like the way they look.
