Default Second rebuild 1973

I was going to use the thread I had started when I bought the car but decided to start an actual rebuild thread.
I have already rebuilt the power steering, new brake pads and calipers on the front and just been working to get the car drivable. I performed a compression test and got 127-133 psi so not planning an engine rebuild at this point but instead will pull the engine, reseal, clean and paint. I am also going to strip and paint the car back to the original 927 paint code as well as carpet, seat covers and door panels.
Since there is still some great driving weather left I am not going to start the heavy work until sometime towards the end of October but plan some light non driving restoration now.
I will need lots of help as many already know and will post a lot of pictures and ask tons of questions. :-)
Here's what I want to do this weekend!
The door seals and rocker trim. How do I get the scratches out and what paint finish should be used to keep them correct?

Thanks
Scott

Scott, I have tried more than once to get the door sills to buff out or to paint them and make used ones look good. Honest truth? Just bite the bullet and buy new ones if you want them to look good. They only cost like $25 each. Those scratches you really cant get "out".

As for the rocker panels, they are usually a little easier to deal with. You can just buff out the chrome area and then repaint the black stripe and you are all done.

Also, pull your vette out into your driveway and take some good pics out in the sun for us. I want pics that show the car as a whole, espeically if eventually you will be taking a road trip in it to dallas!.

I will go take some good pix right now and post in a few. The only thing is I really want to keep as many of the original parts as possible on this car.
Are there any special buffing tools to help with the rocker trim?

Nice car and looking forward toward your thread! My interior is also 927 and is original, except A previous owner swapped the vinyl seats for leather, which is ok with me.

Have you tried cleaning up the paint a little bit? If the traditional wash wont remove the dirt, I have found that Mr. Clean Majic Erasers do a wonderful job. Check out this video I made a few years back:

I know eventually you are gonna paint it, but maybe your paint can be presentable for the time being!

Man brother, I tried the paint is really porous and I even tried to get the oil stains off with degreaser to no avail.
It seems like it is really soaked into the paint.

I was just doing some reading and it was talking about the anodizing being a problem if it is removed.
What r your thoughts there?

I tried everything to get the years of nasty off this 82 I had, and warm soapy water with the majic eraser was the ONLY thing that would work.

Hi FC,
About the rocker trim panels.
They're extruded aluminum. They were given a brushed finish, and then clear anodized.
Some people do polish the trim, but it changes the appearance of them.
Removing the anodizing, restoring the brushed finish, and then re-anodizing is possible, but quite expensive. Anodizing a part that large at home isn't very easy.
There are reproductions available but they're not really all that accurate.
There's talk about 'new', more accurate trim panels becoming available, but no one seems to know when that might be.
So right now having really nice, accurate, rocker trim isn't very easy or reasonably priced.
So?
Regards,
Alan

Thanks for the info on the rocker trim, I think I will leave them and maybe just repaint the black. They aren't too bad but the door seals are pretty ugly! Hahaha
