Default LS header selection #%+%#

The selections for a good fitting set of these is non existent. Yes you can use some of the others but the fit is terrible. I want something that fits and does not rub the ground. Without going to a custom set of 2000+ headers and exhaust I am going to just put on a set of shorty headers until someone comes up with a set that fits. I need to get this project back on track and the headers and the air filter/MAF is the main problems right now.

Ok rant over. I think I found a used set that should work. When they arrive I will clean them up and install them. Hate doing this though.

won't the stock manifolds flow pretty well until you find a set of long tubes? no need to waste money on shorties

Probably but I sold the stock ones and the ones I'm picking up are about the same price as a set of good LS stock manifolds. Plus they are lighter.

Gordon, what about asking Kooks to build you a set of their new 1 7/8" ss C3 headers with the top part made for an LSx engine? Might be worth a shot.

This article is for a stock LS1 and the bigger tube headers did improve HP. The stock manifolds are good up to about 400 HP. I will be making over 500 with my setup.

That is what I'm looking for! I will give them a call. Even if it is 1K for the headers that is OK if they fit and don't drag the ground!

Good luck, Gordon. Let us know what you find out.

I'm helping a buddy put an LQ4 in his 82 vette and headers seem to be all over the place, yet there is no clear solution that we know will work.

Maybe that muscle rods stuff will work correctly.

Yes they suck! They hang so low I can barely make it into the garage without them dragging. I had to modify them to clear the steeroids. I will say stay clear of these headers. They were quite expensive and I paid another 150 to have them modified to clear the steeroids and now I have a pair of 1000 dollar junk tubes. Need I say more they look pretty but they perform horrible.

Gordon talk to American Racing Headers in New York I've been per steering these guys to do an LS type header for our Vettes. You need to sell them on the fact that C2/3 chassis are same so market could be pretty decent. Since your in the area you could get your car up there for mock up. One thing I would like to see is clearance for a ZL1 style oil cooler. I could send one out for initial build. We need 1 7/8" for an LS3 to run its best no whimpy 1 3/4" tubes.

Gordon,

Let me know if you are able to find something that works. Or maybe if we put in an order for 2 sets we could get a better price.

I also have steeroids in my 72, and will be making the LS swap in the spring, so sounds like we may need the same setup

Well hell...

Guess I am sending the Melrose's back. I have had them in my garage for a few months now, but haven't even opened the box. I found your thread and saw the ground clearance pictures. Definitely not what I want to deal with on this car!!

Looks like I am going to go mid-length.... something like the Sanderson LS134 (although not sure if they work with the LS3 heads) unless I see a better alternative pop up in this thread.

I have a set of used shorty headers on the way to me now. I will use these so I can move the car around and at least start and run it. I will continue to pursue the elusive long tube header for the C3.

I would send them back for sure. Unfortunately mine have been modified some and now the bottom tubes are scratched and slightly dented. This from just going into and out of the storage facility. I can take a picture of the low clearance again if anybody is interested. These are not even close to fitting for ground clearance.

Glad I didn't go with the Melrose , I wanted Stainless and that was the deal breaker for Me. Ended up building My own , they fit like a glove and plenty of ground clearance. Nothing will fit Your Car like a custom built set done right, nothing.

Than you Gordon for the info on the headers. Really didn't want to try my amateur hand and fabricating headers, but might have to learn some time.

You must be one of the guys lusting for the $400 6.0L@ Pick n Pull.

First its a Camaro Craft article, I wouldn't trust them to be the most accurate.

Secondly the article deals with a relatively stock LS1 motor not even a LS6 variant, if a LS6 had been used I think results would have differed greatly.

Thirdly Gordon and a few others like myself have LS3 motors, they ARENT LS1/6 motors, they REV higher, have BIGGER CAMS and way different cylinder heads.

My LS3 was a 4K mile virgin but, I have re-cammed it, done some head work, and intend to run it to 7000RPM just like my C6 Z06 does. I want a set of 1.875 headers for my build even if I have to do this myself. I have a few projects to get out of the way first then back on my 72 LT-1 swap to LS3 power. Dan Popp said his 72 LT-1 went 11.8's at Holleys LS Fest this year, I hope to better my C6 Z06 best of 11.89@122MPH in my 72 when the build is done.
