I want to replace the vacuum canister on my 71 with 454, 4sp, p/b, p/s and stock exhaust manifolds. If I take out the charcoal canister can I get the vacuum canister out the side vent? If not how do I get the thing out of there.

Hi,
If there's a way to get the vacuum storage tank out without moving the master cylinder to the side, (toward the engine), I don't know what it is.
What makes it difficult is that the mounting legs on the tank want to get caught on the brake lines coming from the side of the master cylinder as you pivot the tank into position.
With the power brake booster it's even more difficult.
Regards,
Alan
Mooser, thanks for the pic. Looks like if I just grease it up a little it will slip right in there. Just kidding. Looks like the master cylinder will need to come off, unless anyone else has an idea. Do I need to disconnect the brake lines and take it off or can I loosen it and push towards the engine a little?
You do not need to removed the lines. There is enough play in the lines to push it towards the engine. It may also be helpful to remove the clutch pedal rod, at least it was in my case.

NOT fun to do this...and be aware that the wiring harness at the firewall is really tight...and comes close....so be aware of it.
If needed.,....you remove the master cylinder from the booster and take the booster out and the lines stay attached.
