Default Differential ring gear backlash problem...

I am re doing my differential and have followed the paper from Gary to prep and set up everything again but I ran into a problem.

I installed a new ring and pinion and all new gears and races.

The problem is when I check my backlash.
I get readings ranging from 0 to 0.0035" on other teeth .
I checked the rear runout and that is 0.007" so that is ok, just the backlash is my problem.

Anybody any idea what might cause this big of a difference ?

Thanks

You probably should post up what shims you are running. You will need to try different pinion shims or may need to shift the ring gear left or right more.

When you bolted the ring gear to the carrier, did you go over it with a stone or something similar to ensure any nicks or burrs are removed? the same should be done to the carrier face as well....
Also put the carrier in the case (without the ring gear) and measure to see if it has any runout where the ring gear sits.

How much runout does the ring gear flange on the carrier have?

On the ring gear flange I have a runout of 0.0007"

I have been getting a lot of help and guidance from Gary (gtrvette1999) and I removed everything, cleaned it went over the back of the ring gear and the flange with a stone so there are no burrs left on it that could be a problem.

This is the pattern I am getting for now and a backlash between 0.006 to 0.0098

Do you have access to a machine shop? With that much runout you will never get the pattern or backlash where it needs to be.

no unfortunately I don't have access to a machine shop.

Do I need to have the gear face milled so it is at 0 ? I was under the impression that 0.0007 is ok ? ( made a mistake in the first post, forgot one 0 )

You are fine at .0007 no need to machine it.

You are using way too much marking compound. It's messing up your pattern. Wipe off the excess and thin it will a little gear lube on your brush. You may have to do this several times. The pinion gear is now packed with compound.

Ok, much better. Your pattern is fine on both drive and coast, your pinion depth is good.
But your backlash variance is too much. .001 variance is acceptable. Not .004. Please check it again. Turn the pinion 1/4 turn and take a measurement and write it down. Keep doing this until the ring gear has made 1 full revolution. Depending on ratio, you should have 12-16 numbers written down.

OK I played a bit around with shims and these are the numbers I have

keep in mind that I measure in mm and have to convert them to inches, so there might be a small margin there.

0.005
0.006
0.007
0.006
0.007
0.007
0.007
0.006
0.006
0.006
0.005
0.005
0.006

and this is the new pattern that came up with the new shim that I added

A couple of thousandths makes a big difference in your pattern as you noticed.
Your runout is in your pinion not the ring gear. That's why I needed all the backlash numbers. Since you don't have access to a machine shop there is nothing you can do about it and there is nothing to worry about.
You're current backlash is too tight. It's going to sing to you when it's warmed up running down the highway. Add .002 to the right side carrier shim and call it a day. You did good.

I added 0.002 and now have a backlash between .007 and .009

So now do I add 0.005 to each side to put pressure on the bearings and call it a day ?

Thanks for the help

Those are super shims. Add 3 - 5 thousandths to each shim pack, evenly. Use the least number of shims you can. Use a .020 shim instead of 2 .010 shims. Be sure to clean each shim thoroughly for final assembly. No lube between the shims.
