Default 70 clock **** sleeve - Alan?

I figure this is something Alan has info on. The clock **** in my 70 moves around. The assembly manual shows 3928775 as a sleeve, but doesn't give specs.

I found, http://www.ebay.com/itm/1968-1976-Co...pV5cA9&vxp=mtr, on eBay. It looks like vacuum hose that is cut to some length. Any insight on what it actually should be.

Hi D,
The shaft the clock reset **** mounts on is much smaller in diameter than the diameter of the hole for it in the gauge cluster bezel.
A short sleeve was slipped on the shaft before the **** was tightened and pushed most of the way into the hole.
Think of a short piece of soda straw, black, smaller in diameter, and thicker walls.
Regards,
Alan

Yep. It's not much. You've probably got something lying on the work bench which would beat the $10 eBay price.

Heat shrink tubing works great as a replacement for the clock **** sleeve. You can find it in many sizes at your local parts stores. We have some here but I don't know what the size is but it's just a tiny bit smaller than the hole in the lens. (you don't need to heat it either)

Short length of a black coffee stir/straw and/or bar straw works as well.

That would be a "McGyver" fix, rather than a "Bubba". It would be a decent approximation of the original part.

I have always thought that this sleeve was made out of a much more rigid plastic....or at least every one I have come across is rigid and can not be bent by using my fingers. When I need one I use the somewhat hard plastic vacuum tubing used on the newer Corvettes.

The original pieces were a hard plastic that was vacuum-chromed, I believe. But, any kind of "substitute" would be better than just having that smaller diameter stem flopping around. If the 'stir stick' is the right size to fit the hole in the lens, that would be a pretty close approximation of the tube (except that it would be black).

P.S. Actually, there is an NOS box with **** and stem cover being advertised on eBay right now...$14.95.

Hi,
While the nut and tubular slotted nut were chrome plated the sleeve that is added to surround the clock's stem was black plastic.
Regards,
Alan

Thanks for the photo Alan. I was going to post a photo but it is pointless with yours being posted. I thought it was a rigid plastic. I have never seen these tubes be flexible like a rubber vacuum hose.

Although....I don't see why the flexible tubing wouldn't work. There's no stresses placed on that 'tube' during resetting of the clock. A substitute part just wouldn't last as long as the original.

{With that said, the rigid part would still be a better choice, I think.}
