I've been doing this frame off restoration for 5 years now. I'm about at the point of paint. My hope ( if the weather holds up) is to at least seal this car before winter. Spring / summer of 2018 I'm gonna paint this beast Monaco orange. I've been looking at southern polyurethane to use as sealer. Now I'm not married to this decision at all. I'm asking you what you think I should use all the way through to paint. Sub questions include do I need to use something different one the aluminum headlights, grills and window washer cover than I use on the glass ? I would greatly appreciate your advice on what to buy and what to use to get to Monaco orange. I just bought the devilbiss
starting line hvlp guns. It includes a gun and a detail gun. My wife's uncle gave me a devilbiss clean air system. I purchased new dssacant and will be purchasing a new compressor in about two weeks. I've painted many many things over the years with excellent results using rattle cans. This will be my first attempt with a hvlp gun. Trust me I have extreme faith in my abilities. I really need advice on paint materials to use. I'm not one in life to usually ask anyone for help, in fact I'm usually the one to give it. With that said can you advise me with what to buy from sealer to color. Thank you for your encouragement , Jef. I'm
Prior to you hearing good advice from Dub, I would offer that 1969 Monaco Orange is correct for your model year....but 1970/71 Ontario Orange (FireMist) paint is a much better looking orange, IMO.
ANY new paint job would be great! Keeping it the same color as it was originally produced is understandable. But, if the car didn't originally come in Monaco Orange, why lock into that shade when you could go with Ontario Orange FireMist?? {just sayin'...}

Now you and others can do as you wish and use what you want so I do not get a backlash on from those members how feel I am pushing stuff down people throats.
But....you asked so here it goes. If this was a project that I had to do...
The aluminum/stainless steel parts DO get a different product applied to them than what the body gets. The stainless steel trim molding parts for the wiper door and the 'eyebrows' trim for the top hood surround get media blasted and then a special primer that bonds to stainless is used.
As for the raw body...after all my bodywork has been completed....I gelcoat the body. This is due to the fact that your car is the press molded polyester fiberglass and that is what I use.
IF and that is a big IF.....If I could not get gelcoat.....then my next choice would be a polyester primer.
I have not used the SPI products...so I can not confirm or dispute their value in this area. I know 'porchdog' uses it quite a lot and if you want to contact him...obviously feel free to do so.
If you need more detailed info from me...respond accordingly.
Dub, I agree others will have different views on materials. I'd ask that they respect this thread as info I'd like to have from you. One of the biggest problems out there is too much info. Many different people have excellent results with the way they have done it. There are literally hundreds of ways to do this. Some if not most are not compatible with each other. As you know many many materials aren't compatible with each other. I want to know from one person what materials to use to get from bare glass to Monaco orange. No disrespect to anybody else who has an opinion but the fact that materials aren't compatible is something a novice like me cannot figure like professionals. If you're game to give me a step by step directive on materials I gaurante others like me would greatly apreciate it. Hell I can use xyz fillers sealers and paint and probably have a nice finish ....,for a month or a year until the different products attack each other. Thanks for your advice in advance.

I guess in my mind the Monaco orange is very nice. Maybe I don't actually know the color like I think I do especially since I've never seen it in person. Guess I'll have to look at Ontario and what seems to be called hugger orange. Thanks.
I would go to a few body shop suppliers in you're area and talk to them ,than decide which product line to use. After making a choice on a product line use there primer to clear ,every area has a choice or more popular line of paint.My Daughters body shop uses one kind of paint product that's what the body and painter feels is the best ,and they do great work.

I was in your position and started researching what to put onto a bare body. I had no experience with a spray gun. I ruled out gel coat because it seemed to require more skill than I possessed and there seemed MANY ways to get into trouble.
I finally settled on SPI epoxy as the first thing I sprayed because of the large number of recommendations it received on the Forum. I was also influenced by Forum member Porchdog over in the GENERAL TOPIC/PAINT AND BODY section. To date, I am not unhappy with my selection.
Nothing wrong with Monaco Orange (as I indicated in my post). I just thought that color was a little too red for my taste...and I've heard others offer a similar view.
