My 69 looks like this

I had it painted in the 90's and the shop that did it flashed on some black to pretty it up, but my best guess is it started out natural

Default Heater Box

The heater box in the engine compartment was a natural color. Once cleaned you can spray a clear coat over it to keep it that way. However for judging they would take points off .

Hi 7691,
The heater blower box in the engine compartment was installed after the 'black-out' in the engine compartment was done so it would typically have remained 'natural' fiberglass as has been said.
The air box on the interior side of the firewall was left un-painted too.
Regards,
Alan

I do not know if it is me or not.... but I do know that when I have to replace those straps. They are made in a way that it is BEST to be able to get to the backside of that strap so you can spread the portions of the heater hose clamp apart far enough to keep that clip locked in place.

I have stopped wasting my time to trying to figure out a way to lock those clamps in place without getting to the backside of that strap and have them be solidly mounted.

My experiences have 'trained' me NOT to disassemble any riveted or otherwise permanently formed parts in these cars, unless those joints are no longer solid. It is much easier to just spend the time to perform 'cosmetic surgery' on such parts as they are, then mask/coat/paint as needed to make it all LOOK original (whether it is to NCRS standards or not). I doubt that anyone is able to produce [truly] riveted joints in the same manner as was done at the factory, and it's just not worth the grief to destroy those fasteners and then try to re-create them.

There is no need to remove the rivets to install the heater hose clamp in the front of the heater box if that is what was being commented on. Or at least the last 1969 I did ...I did not need to remove that bracket for the heater hose clamp.

And YES...I have installed rivets that have passed the critical eye of picky judges. And actually have a few of the rivets where they were bucked NOT be perfect...because we all know ...not all of the rivets that were bucked from the facotry were 100% prefect in every way. And I know this because I have seen it.
