putting halfshafts on - yokes 90 deg apart
Putting things back together. 1980 GM shop manual states to set the yokes 90 apart per the page shot below step one. .
Mine are currently not 90 deg per this photo
Two questions. First, what is the best way to get them to 90 deg. I assume that since it's a differential they don't have to turn together, but since it's limited slip one has to be held while the other one is turned. Could one half shaft be connected to the wheel and then held with the parking brake while the drive shaft is rotated to get the free yoke moving. Also, I notice that this excerpt talks about the outboard drive flange which doesn't exist on 80-82 models. So clearly this section wasn't updated (like many others). So does the issue of 90 deg out of phase matter.
My other question is just to learn. Since once on the road and doing some turns the position of one yoke relative to the other will change, why does it matter what the orientation is when they are put on?
Thanks,

Total rubbish, can't possibly matter as like you say it'll change on the first corner, actually probably change when you rotate the wheel while tightening the u-joint cap/straps.
Manual info has been brought up before as being wrong.

Where or why this was printed is beyond me as you can't back out of your driveway without it changing. It is in my 69 chassis service manual also but GM has always been bad at correcting things even when really stupid...

I thought you only needed to disconnect the battery when you were putting air in the tires...

NO NO NO!!!
FILL the coolant to put them IN, DRAIN the coolant for taking them OUT
(I hope it's not too late out you'll have to have the radio re-calibrated)

Kind of like turning the flat tire so the flat part is on top.

Crap, I never thought of that.
That's going to save me some time in the future as well as not having to cut the rims off and buy new ones whenever I get a flat
Thanks

But does the radio need to be recalibrated if it's aftermarket? Mines an Alpine. There's still a Bob Dylan cassette in there. Sounds pretty distorted. But then it is Dylan, so maybe it's just as originally recorded.
