Thanks Lars, didn't mean to get the heavy artillery involved but this sucks. The engine is back from rebuild now and I asked why didn't you replace that pilot bearing and they said oh we don't mess with that but it's probably ok to leave it in like that it'll be fine. But I messed with it and broke it. So now I need a puller.

If you were within driving distance, I'd come over and pull it out for you. And then we'd have a beer and a good time.

Well i guess I'll have some beers anyway and drink your beer too since I'm no longer there in the Denver area. The puller works snap 1,2,3 ...got it out ...and now on to next whatever anticipated little dilemma as I get this puppy put back in the car.
Thanks for all the suggestions!

It's amazing how simply using the right tool for the job works almost every time... Good job!

I use a large tap that fits the hole,
Thread it in til it bottoms in the crank, and keep turning until it's out.
Works every time with no mess, and a 12 point socket will fit on the square end of the tap so you can use an impact on it which makes it super fast.
If it's not the bushing type then I use a several inch long 5/16 bolt and nut attached to the end of a slide hammer, stick the head of the bolt through the bearing, and have a helper jam a screw driver in the bearing next to the bolt to jam the head in behind the bearing, and slide hammer it out.
If the bearing comes apart then I weld the bolt head to the bearing, and angrily slam it out of there with said slide hammer. I have an attachment for it that has a 90 degree bend with a hole drilled through it.
