Hey thanks to you and others for the great input. I'm 61 and haven't messed with stuff like this for 30 years. When I was a kid friends and I could pull a motor swap in a long evening. Never used a torque wrench on anything and it was all fun. Now I have a great car which mostly runs great but I keep messing with it. Just can't leave it alone.
Set the points to .018" to start. 28* dwell, then as the cam follower wears, it goes to 30*, thus staying in spec the longest.
I did get those parts but set the dwell at 31, timed it to 10 btdc and it runs great! Thanks. Never saw unipoints before but that's what was under the cap. Never again and I will change those out at 15 to 20k intervals. Thanks
The unipoints with attached condenser are the so-called improved version. Old timers used to extend the useful life of the points by re-using the separate condenser, removing the points and carefully filing off the point and pit that developed on the contacts. You could do this a couple times before they got too thin and save a couple bucks, back when a couple bucks was a lot of money.
Uni-points were just a 'convenience' item so that the mechanic only had to install one part. And,honestly, with old fingers, getting the screw into that condenser clip can be a challenge!
Most points are set reasonably close at the factory. Install, then set dwell. Done.
