Default Differential rebuild, side yokes?

Recently got my new to me 70LT1 up and running after 1 1/2 year refurbishment. Noticed excessive growling noise from rear end, typical bad bearing indication. Decided to overhaul differential and found excessive wear of side yoke ends. Metal deposited throughout, embedded in bearing races.
I can purchase new side yokes or repaired side yokes about same price, so what would be the advantage of one over the other? I read that one poster here said new ones are junk, and rebuilt ones can be junk, is this the consensus?

What’s the meat left on the ends? You may be able to harden what you have and tune it in?
i had same issue but my 79 was soft..not sure yours is? Or how far worn past hardening.

^ One is .180, the other is .174, both are soft as tested with a file.
Just read your whole thread, good info there. Interesting that you were able to get your .173 to fit nice with posi tuning. I thought that I read somewhere that you bought new side yokes but returned them?

Those buttons for the ends look like the ticket. I am in the same boat as Kidster71 in that bottom thread. We don't have the capability of machining the buttons but if the buttons were available we could install them.

returned a used ebay set..second one was the ticket..then hardened. Yours may just need hardening. Maybe fit them and see? Beyond the hardening i heard dimensions not so consistent new either.
be great to know what you need and size the buttons custom? No cluewhat grinding hardened butons would do..

Every button has to be custom machined to create the desired endplay for each individual yoke. The yokes themselves also have to be machined to accept the press-fit nipple in the buttons and to create a flat, smooth surface for the buttons to seat on. So, no, you could not install the buttons if Gary or I made them available, unfortunately.

I just use the best yokes and never have a problem. They were about $300 each pre c-19.

If I find a shop to make these buttons, do I shoot for .185" from clip to end? Or longer and machine to fit?

You machine the yoke ends and the buttons to create the endplay you need.
