If you want to talk Hemis. The 1965 Chrysler A990 Aluminum head 426 with the mag crossram was probably the most powerful production engine ever. Dominating the NHRA Super Stock classes for several years. Approximately 360 were built with mag and aluminum bolt on parts such as waterpump and housing, oil pump, heads, and the mag crossram intake with 12.5 compression right out of the box, the only way to beat one was to own one. The engine below is one of those very rare pieces straight from the crate inserted into my 70 Cuda convertible. Awsome power.

The "sphere" shaped combustion chamber is THE most perfect design. The Hemi makes a lot of power due to this fact alone. The way it was achieved was by putting the spark plug in the center of the chamber.
The Chevrolet heads cannot come close to being better than this design.

I agree it is best best head design for the STRIP and used w/ forced induction. The Chevy Big Block is called the "Semi Hemi" and rightfully so. The Chevy head is often believe to be the best for naturally aspirated engines and best for the street.
There is no doubt the 426 Hemi was one bad ****.
I think you guys need to understand more about this engine. I have been making my living supplying parts to this engine for the last three years. The little engines may have hemi shaped chambers, but the DCX engine does it with two valves operated by pushrods. The two plugs are needed because the chambers are so large. This engine was designed as a truck engine, and the camshaft shows it. These heads will flow MUCH more air than they currently are. The new Z06 engine coming out is going to be much larger displacement; big block type displacement if you know what I mean. The latest version of the HEMI DCX is bringing out will make more HP than the current Z06.
Don't get me wrong, I love my Vette and my Camaro. However, everyone has to be happy to be in the middle of a HP war. I don't see why everyone wants to bash DCX for coming out with a rear drive, V8 powered car. Bringing up the hype issue is a little ironic too; have you not seen the GTO ads GM is running? I think we need to enjoy this latest version of muscle car wars.
Speaking from personal experience? Doubt it. My best friend has a 426 Charger that would kill you or me in any gear. BTW it's stock.
When tuned right (the engine is picky about setting) it is a running. Mt dad ran 11.9's in the stock class w/ slicks in his '68 Hemi GTX coupe w/ 727 and 4.10 gears.
still a lot of hype. The 426 is a tiny little engine by todays standards. If i wanna beat you i'll just drop in a Chevy BB 572. Chevy will always be able to outgun Ford and Chrysler. You can take that to the bank.

Then you don`t know any thing about Chryslers or drag racing. A A990 is NOT a street hemi.

My friend has a short bed Dodge Ram Hemi with a chip and an AFE air intake system on it. IT HAULS!
But I bought a six cylinder straight shift ram for myself. It gets 18 mpg in town and 21 on the road with 4:10 gears. I' d much rather have it than the Hemi he has. Mine is a 5.9 Cummins Turbo Diesel, six speed, 3500 one ton, Quad-cab short bed that pulls like a freight train. The torque is unbelievable, and you never downshift unless you stop and then you take off in 3rd then 5th and 6th.
Keep the Hemi and put it in a rearwheel drive car for Police vehicles. I still can't believe GM and Mopar got out of the rear wheeldrive business and let Ford eat their lunch in that market. Jim

thats a big ole piece of pig iron for only 426CI. Again i'd rather go with a chevy 502 or 572 that would have street mannors or a blown LS6.
I could drive coast to coast then immediately to the track to blow your doors off.
Don't take this the wrong way. I love my Vette. However, I own a 2003 Hemi
Ram. 5.7 Liter (about 342 CI) with 345 HP. 375 FT LBT's of torque. It's a runner. Two spark plugs per cylinder and the same type of cableless accelerator as the C-5. I' ve had it for a year now and I love it. Watch out when they start putting this engine in cars. I have owned a ford, chevy and dakota before this truck and none can compare to it. It's old technology in a modern formate. If they keep it up like there promising (supercharger) it'll put out over 500 HP. Should keep ford and chevy on their toes. Nothing like a little competition. By tn he way. My wife and I just got back from Dover about
an hour ago. About 160 miles round trip and I got just over 16 MPG. Not bad if you keep your foot out of it.
Why do all of the 3 second dragsters run hemi chambers?
They are efficient, for making power... but not for fuel milage! They still will whoop up on most any piston/pushrod V8 built before or after... and if after, all you need is an 871 blower to bump em up to 750-800 horsepower! (On pump gas... with a stock out of the box bottom end no less!)
I like Chevys cause they are cheap to modify... but they arent the absolute best in their class!
Brings back memories...from my drooling years. I could never afford one. I had a 1964 Malibu SS four-speed 327 that I thought was OK but when one of those 426 Hemis pulled into the Burger King I was...humbled.

you're living in the past.
Get Real!
The only way you could beat a A990 Race Hemi, is if you bought one. No Chevy could touch one in a month of Sundays. The only thing it can`t pass is a gas station. Talk about pig iron, the weight of a A990 comes in under the L88 and both have aluminum heads. The LS6 your refering to is solid heavy iron. No Chevy produces 600 HP right out of the box like the A990. Supercharged correctly will put it in over 1,000 HP and still hold it`s head gasket. Using a Chevy is a no win situation unless racing another Chevy. Hemi Chryslers are just plain and simple the CLASS act if you want to win. You can bench race all you want, but the Hemi is always the one in the winners circle and taking the money home.

Go get your self the April 2004 issue of Super Chevy
Read the article titled "HEMI RAT"
Hummmm Chevy racers trying to build a Hemi for drag racing....
You might want to recheck your spec sheats..Check out the top fuel guys, You will see more Chrysler engines in the fast cars than you see Ford and Chevy combined. What's that...wasn't it the HEMI that was not allowed to run in Nascar after they whiped everyones butt...Ya that was a HEMI. :yesnod:
I like some cars from all brands...you my friend are living life with blinders on if you can't admit there might be something better out there than what you own.
Take them off..you might be suprised at what you see
