for what it's worth, I raced a gen 2 Eclipse GSX (awd) and got my *** handed to me. (granted this was 2 years ago and I was a 13.9)

Stay away from those turbo dsm's unless you're running in the mid 12s.
you dont know WHAT they have done.

the only way you can touch an awd dsm (eclipse/talon) is if you go from a rolling start..

the only way you can touch a fwd is by a dig (stop)

you just better pray that thing will stay revving or you're done

Your RX-7 must racing the slower Corvettes according to this website your RX-7 is faster than most of the slower C3's but slower then almost every Corvette produced since 1989. This is providing you had the fastest production RX-7. If yours was of a slower model then these figures would favor the Corvette even more.

This is a very interesting website if you're interested in seeing how your car measures up to the competition.

I have seen many conflicting #'s on the RX7. The #'s I stuck with were what I read in Car and Driver a few years back. #'s aside, I know who or what I raced and beat. If the numbers on that link were all true, then I would have been worked by those cars (Cobras & Vettes). I'm not saying I beat every Vette, but I beat every Cobra I ever raced. I had more than a few Vettes stomp me. My point was that there are some really quick ricers out there that can eat some V-8's up.

jeez, here we go again.
first off, raise your hand if you know what the term rice means.
lesson #1: rice does not mean import. i don't think anybody here is ready to call a 93 RX7tt rice any more than calling a 360 modena rice (pasta?).
lesson #2: US cars can be rice too. ever seen those cavaliers running fart cans and wings? that's rice.
rice means "poser". it means someone who wants to look fast but isn't really concerned with actually being fast. a ricer views a neon light kit as an equal performance modification to a freer flowing MAF.
a ricer is one of those guys who has watched "fast and furious" so many times he knows the dialog backwards and forwards. he's also the type that thinks you have to turn the stereo up before the race in order to win.
now, back to the original subject at hand. surprisingly, as has already been mentioned, the c3 has a secret advantage you can find just by opening up the exhaust. it's called torque. so that shark was only rated at 165hp. yeah, that's kind of anemic but what does it's torque curve look like? compare that to most of your imports.
short version: sure, a 25 year old vette and a 10 year old import is probably a good race. then again, throw $500-1000 at the vette and game over.

CLUTCHDUST-
dead on with the definition of ricers. it's the cars that are a little more furious than fast.

Apples vs. Oranges - not an equitable comparison. Have some forgotten that technology changes each year and the "rule" book is re-written? Compare the fastest stock Mitsubishi car and a stock Corvette of the same year and that would be the closest equitable comparison. While we're at it, why don't we compare other cars with several years difference? Gee, I would bet the newer year model would beat the older year. Duh!

I do have to agree with the above However, the early 90's RX7's are very fast cars. I had a buddy with one and Don't try to follow one in the curves!!!!

I have a 2nd Gen Turbo Eclipse Spyder and a 76 L-48. Looking at the data, the Eclipse is faster. When mashing the throttle the vette did seem faster. Without question, now that I replaced the exhaust with true duals and headers, I would put my money on the vette. The one thing the Eclipse has in it's favor as far as feel, is the lower ratio of the final drive. Keep in mind that the Eclipse has a turbo and the vette does not.

well this is why i am building my vette the way that i am. fuel injection, be-cool radiator with electric fans, march pully serpintin 1 belt setup, SS gas tank with elec. fuel pump. oh yah time to lay the smack down on some turbo's oh yah and i am planning on supercharging her next year i hope but i am pretty sure that i should be able to take the majority of the cars that come up. have to show fart can cars what it is all about. there is now replacement for displacement.

I think we should have the guy take a 2nd Gen Eclipse Turbo and race it against one of the ZL1s. That'd be a nice race, and that guy would never talk smack again!

If you must stick with a basically stock system, replace your catalytic converter with a high-flow cat. That will give you some nice bang for your buck right there.

I gutted my cat and added a cut out before the mufflers. The muffler shop made a pipe I bolt on to the cut out flange and it dumps the exhaust in front of the right rear tire. I call it my "NASCAR" pipe.

Much less back pressure for min $. It's loud but I like loud! What? Can't hear you!

hmm. Im thinking about remodding some of the engine work and putting a new cat on there. New Intake manifold, Possibly a new carb, Planning on scratching some of the smog controls and putting a nice 360 air filter on top of the block, along with some Dynomax Turbo mufflers( are these obnoxiously loud? Does anyone have them?) and If my wallet can afford it a set of headers. What about my vette post mod against that 2nd gen?
