Default Do I have it wrong?

Hello,

It seems to me that not only are C4 Corvettes the least respected of the family, but the early C4s are the least of that least. The early C4s seem to be the only early gen models to get slammed even within their own gen. I really like my 85 and have for 10 years. I don't pretend that it is better than an LT any more than a Ferarri 308 owner would say his is better than a 328.

So friends tell me . Do I have it wrong?

Some view us as the ugly stepchild. I think we're just in that "in between" stage. Those were some good years.

If it makes you feel any better, I dislike plastic bumper C3s more than early C4s.

Jealousy rears it's ugly head again.

The 4th Gen(I refuse to call them C4's anymore because they never were until the crappy C5 came out), is a huge step up from the shark era and was the stepping stone for the newer models.

1993 was theoriginal year that the C5 was due out, but since GM in their corporate wisdom don't give a **** about anything but themselves, they almost canned the vette.

Read All Corvettes Are Red for the history on it, it's a great book. An even better book is "Heart Of The Beast", all about the ZR1, a car that had been in the works quite some time before it's release and the C5 was already in the development stages.

The later 4th gens outperformed the early 5th gens up until about 2001 when the LS1 got a small bump(on paper if you ask me) in HP. But by that time most of the bugs had been worked out.

The 5th gen guys are the ones who got good jobs and bought whatever the current Corvette was. To buy an '84-'96, you have to be a real enthusiast.

In a few years, the 4th gen will gain in value as more are sent to the crusher and wrecked, burned etc, and the 5th gen will become the bastard child when the 7th gen comes out.

The 5th gen guys are upset because they can't sell their cars for squat, we don't mind though, because most of us are interested in buying not selling our cars and it truly is a buyers market out there for 1984-2004.

The later sharks are finally starting to rise in value, even the 75-76 which were probably the worst example of a Corvette ever.(no offense to anyone who owns one, but it is true).

Sure we kid each other here about L98 vs LT1, but we are brothers here and kidding is alright.

It is a fact that as any Corvette that gets newer, it is better developed than the preceding year. The same can not be said for looks though, the car peaked in 1967 with the best looking vette ever and it went downhill from there until the 2005 model, where it's starting to look better again.

That's not to say I will never own a 5th gen, but it's more feasible to buy a 2007 right now new than a used 97-04.

Right now I could only afford an 84! which is in great shape.
but I'm sure that if I had the means I would get a Z06!!!!
Like I said a Vette is a Vette, how many people on this planet can lay claim of owning a vette? kind of put's it in perspective!!!
Enjoy your vette.

P.S......... I'v had plenty of compliments on my 84!!

There's good and bad things of each generation. I had a 62, high horsepower, bad handling. I don't like the looks of the C6 rear end, but like the front. The best looking Vette ever (according to me) is the split window, but again they don't drive like the C4's, C5's, etc. Just keep buying different ones till you get to old to care

Default Stop yer whinin'

I entered my 1994 Admiral Blue Corvette Coupe in a car show this past Saturday in Wolfe City, TX (see second link). My class was 1984 and newer Corvette. In that class was one 1984 Vette, two 1994 Vettes (one was mine) and about four C5s. The class winner was the 1984 Vette shown in the first link, if memory serves me right. My car looked good, but didn't stand a chance against this tricked out 1984 coupe and the almost new, right out of storage C5s.
BTW, there were 297 cars on display at this small town show. 277 cars were registered in competitive classes. My car was one of those, #220.

WOW.......I had to look again at your name after reading this post I dont want to get into a pissing match with anyone, especially a Mod....but this post smells of the jealosy you opened it up with. "crappy C5's?", "the 5th gen guys?".........what gives man?

Perhaps you forgot that many, many of "the 5th gen guys" used to be 4th gen guys...."to buy a 84-96 you have to be a real enthusiast?"....WTF?...Z06 track guys arent "real" enthusiasts??

We are all part of a group who love the Vette. Many of us have owned & do own examples of other generations. IMO, its ok to rib eachother weather or not you own a LS7 or a Crossfire engine.......the c4 guys arent a brotherhood unto themselves.......ALL Vette owners are the brotherhood.

Some of what you say is factual, but MOST is opinion. C'mon Frank, step up & show some of the leadership that you usually do when you post. I like you as a Mod & a fellow enthusiast & you've given me guidence in the past on several occasions beit tech questions, or a buyer beware situation.......this just isnt like you IMO!

in defense of frank, and to extend my own personal opinion as well, i think he means the C5 has a crappy body style. and the seats blow.

the C5 styling sux and is the worst in corvette history. i will never own one, and i can say that with 100% conviction and a guarantee or your money back that i won't.

frank is right. its soon time the C5 will in fact be the redheaded bastard child in the corvette lineup.

jealous? not here. no way. i love c1, c2, c3, c4......c6, and am looking forward to c7.

81c3, it sounds like you're crying. its not becoming of a corvette enthusiast.

Au contraire Mojo, The '64 coupe was decidedly the best looking C2. The '67 was actually a stripped version of it's forebearers! However, I think history will prove the early C4 body style is the most classic after the C2. If they had just changed the rear end as they did but with round lights and left the front end alone, they would have had it perfect!

The 84 had the crossfire engine, which was not a real great motor. The L98 was a pretty good engine, fastest car around when introduced. It was the fastest American made car for many years afterward. The C4 chassis was world class when introduced. Equal to anything that Ferrari or Porche had at the time. It is still an excellent chassis and lots of fun to drive. The Sledghammer Corvette (255 mph) was build on a 1988 chassis. I like the C4s. I like their looks and they are great fun to drive. (a lot more fun than the C3s) The C5s and C6s tend to feel more like an ordinary passenger car with what feels like a softer suspension. It doesn't feel like a Vette unless you stomp on it a little bit. I do prefer the interior of the later C4s though, and also the more rounded rear end.

I've read these comments over and over thinking maybe I'm not reading them right. A few of the posts were level headed and what I would expect to hear from an adult. no negatives what so ever. It seems that if your trying to lable someone else as a basher, but don't want to bee labled a basher yourself, while your bashing , the only thing you have to do to keep from being fingered while you fingering someone/something is, write "this just my opinion", and your clear?!
sometimes "opnions" need to be kept to themselves.
Let me give you an example: we're all at a car show. I have entered what I concidered a cherry C5, that I'm very proud of. Not the shiney paint, that someone else painted, but all the cool mods I did myself. what nobody see's my pride and joy, my baby, out in the parking lot. My C4. Not all the "glitter" of my C5, but has all the trickest racing equipment, all set up exactly the way I want, ready to do business.
You and your ol'lady come to the show to get some ideas for your vette.
You see standing next to my C5 and decide that you need to give me your "opinion". So here you come, hand in hand, with your fat, scraggley bearded Ol"lady, wearing a white t shirt tanktop, somethings inside dangling all over the place, spandex shorts tucked up front and rear and pulled up over her beerbelly, stretched to the hilt, no teeth, smoke hanging out of her mouth, and you feel the need to voice your "opinion", negativley, about my show car, and what type of person I am? Well guess what pal, I have a few "opinions" myself.
I have the right to my "opinion", the question is.....should I give it .

Anyway, I go to GTG's & cruises all the time. Yesterday I went to 2 different ones. We had some zo6's some C6 zo6s . Everyone was invited.
Quess what...... I had the only C4 At either one of them. I know I'm not the only C4 in the bay area. NOBODY talked anything about ANYONE or ANYTHING, that's right.....not even my C4. I didn't have to drive in the back, or, they didn't try and cut me down. When was the last time anyone seen a pack of C4's Together?
But you can regularly see a pack of C5 & C6's Going down the road with one C4, ME! they are my FRIENDS,Where's everybody else w/ C4's?
Get out and drive them!
First, standup....back away from the computer....go OUTSIDE.... get in you vette and drive it. the're fun. The computer will be there when you return. And you just might have different things to write about. If not....the problem isn't other corvettes or there owners.
O'ya....."this is just my opinion".

Your car is cool and to you it's a great car and you enjoy it. I think that my 95 is real cool and I like it better than most everything that I see but ya know what? When I purchased my first car, a 73Vega GT I thought that it was a really cool sports car. It was what I could afford at the time (I wanted an MGB-GT). I drove it for 7 years and 125,000 miles and I was proud of it the entire time. I hang with C5 and C6 guys all the time as they're the most common around now and frankly there is no order to the pack when we all go for an afternoon cruze except that the guy who knows the way to the resturant at the end of the trip is the one who leads. Once when I organized a trip to the boat yard, I lead the parade of about 25 vettes through town.

Getting put down ... by who? Who is slamming early C4s? Frankly, I've never seen any adult vette owner put down another well kept and maintained vette at a gathering or a show. Sure there are a few halfwits each of whom knows everything there is to know ...... but the rest of us enjoy our cars and admire those of others And there are a lot of owners of "other" cars who think they know what constitutes a good vette and what constitutes and bad one..... but then again .... they don't have a C4 as a DD.

Relax and enjoy your car Go out and drive and forget the complex

i dont get this post at all........and your a moderator ? bashing C5's just to justify the C4's position ? its a big world out there. more than Vette clubs and car shows and this forum. you paint with a pretty broad brush and its still a narrow stroke. just because one has read a few books and owns a Vette or two, doesnt make them an expert on people's sentiments. i know Plenty of people with Vettes thru out the generations that love all Vettes(like me) and would never call any one of them "crappy" my parents taught me," dont say nada,if you cant say nice" and your last paragraph, contradicts your bashing it is what it is though.........

Hot Rod my old friend, it seems like you dont post unless its C5 bashing. very few times in my life (in person or this forum) have i seen someone detest a car sooooo much as you do (C5) did the C5 bully you in school or steal your girlfriend take it easy, learn to enjoy the car thats universally loved by everyone who sees them and drives them. when i drive mine, its like hanging out with a popular celebrity, just as i am sure your cars does too

No one was bashing my C4 at either of the car shows I mentioned in my previous post. Nor did I bash anyone else's C1-C6. I also belong to the Corvette Club of Texas. I'm one of the few C4 owners in that club, but NO ONE says I have a POS C4. All of us in that club, all of us in the car shows and, I assume, all of us Vette owners have NICE Vettes. A friend and fellow Vette owner told me once that there is no such thing as a bad Vette. That being the case, why all of this bashing??? If you want to bash something, bash the high cost of parts and maintenance and the lousy mechanics falling out of shade trees that charge us these prices.
