I'm still really impressed. With the time and work you put into that paint job, it's easy to see why a vette repaint isn't cheap. You must be pretty proud of the outcome!

I am very impressed, paint and electrical work are somethings I really do not like to mess with. I am thinking of having my 84 repainted soon. It looks like you are a profesional from those pics. keep them coming, I look forward to seeing the finished product.

Gator, It looks great !

Now if I can pick your brain a little.

I agree with taking the entire car apart. I am going to start taking mine apart in the next few weeks for Silver paint.

Im also going to take the front bumper, rear bumper, head lights, and mirrors off.

?My question to you is the rear hatch.. I was debating taking it out, or just leaving it in and making a hidden seem.. mostly because im nervous about having to line it up properly. Coments ?

?Also I was planning on leaving the hood on the vehicle , for support, and so i dont have to worry about lining things up as much... I was going to assume that it would be painted with the hood up for ease ??? Coments ?

?Another question would be your door jams, which you did not paint. IM not going to either.. So did you paint with the doors open , and create a hidden line on the jam some where ? How did you prevent the over spray to the jams if they were closed ?

I assume you sanded this ? I plan to d/a 80 then 150, with a red scotch brite pad to finish.

Looks like you used a lot of tape, paper and plastic for over spray.

Well again it looks great, and I appreciate any feed back?

thanks,
now on the rear hatch definitley take it out and also remove the hatch weatherstrip. it will make things much easier in the long run. there are 4 nuts holding the rear glass hinge in place once you remove the halo trim you will see them under the sealer. I used a sharpie and traced around the washers to mark my location and reinstallation was a piece of cake, just put it back where it was, i also used the sharpie to mark the location of the hood bolts and got it back on right the first time. use a green or red sharpie it shows a little better.

on the hood there is that little area on the underside around the edge that has to be painted. I just found it easier to paint off the car on saw horses, also it makes it easier to mask off, you just use one big plastic drop cloth to cover from the bottom of the windshield forward. it will also make it less prone to runs than if you paninted it in the open position. again if tyou mark your bolts location before removal alignment is easy.

on the jambs I completely masked the entire jamb, door side and body side. probably overkill but only took about 30 mins per side. then I back taped the seam where the door closes. I painted it with the doors closed.

I wet sanded the car with 500 grit paper except for the hood that had previously been repainted, I used a DA to take it back down to the factory primer then used 500 on it also. be very carefull with a DA it is easy to dig the edge into the fiberglass. I also used red scotchbright pads on some hard to sand areas.as long as your factory paint is still good scuffing with 500 is all you need.

as far as taping that is where i get a little picky sometimes, I just hate to see a nice paint job and then see overspray around the car. makes it look cheaply done. I would rather spend a extra hour taping it off correctly. hey whats the rush anyway. I am not a professional by any means, but that does not mean your paint job can not look nice. no one wants to believe i painted it in my homemade booth at my house.
good luck with yours and feel free to ask me questions. I will help if I can

I hate to asked but here it goes. I know you did a first class prep job on the car, and I know your panels are straight, but with 5 coats of clear did you notice any waves in the paint/clear? If not how did you do it without that showing up. When I refer to waves I mean it is a visual thing and you certainly cannot feel anything.

Thanks for your comments and great job!

Practice? I have one you could practice on.

Me too. I had the worst experience with paint shops. My 67 was in three shops in less the 4 years. Each one had it for about a year or more. No car I own will ever be put into a paint shop again. I would rather drive it in primer gray without any paint. Either I or someone I can trust will paint it or it won't happen. All paint shop owners are full of **** and should be shot!

Sorry, bad subject.

Beautiful job.

I think you are talking about urethane peel. and if you get your paint slick enough ( 0 orange peel) you will see some I eliminated a lot of it by block sanding the clear with a hard block (no sponge pad on it). you can get rid of almost if not all by block sanding after every two coats of clear. depends on how much time and effort you want to go thru. mine has some urethane peel but not a lot. you the painter will notice it more than anyone. have you noticed the amount of orange peel in new car paint jobs? they are awfull
