As some of you may know, i'm still in high school. On thursday of last week a kid from school asked me if i wanted to race his grand am with my corvette. I looked at him and asked if he was serious and he goes.."yup". It had a crappy lil 4 cyl in it, completely stock. i think it was a 2.2L? Oh, by the way, "ITS QUICK"
He says to me "whats in that thing?(the vette) like a V-6?" <---ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
I never raced the kid but what possesses somebody to think that corvettes come with v6's or turbo 4 cylinders?
Maybe one day i'll get smart and start taking advantage of these morons. say $20 a race. I could make some good cash on these idiots
Invite him to a local track. My local track as "Grudge matches" every Friday. Kinda fun to watch; pick-ups against Camaro's BTW Grand Ams are quick, here's a vid of a 04 doing 15.20. I've seen in different magazines, new 87 C4 with times from 13.5 to 15.3. Be careful and don't let us down.

He's probably never owned or had a family member own a car with more than 4 cylinders. Which is why he thinks his GA is fast, and why it doesn't occur to him a car would come with double that.
Fast is all relative. Some people have no baseline to draw from.
Most people I work with are surprised I drive a car so old. They have no idea what owning a car older than 5 years is like, so they have no perspective. I think they probably think it's pretty rough too, until I take them for a ride. Then they are truly shocked that the interior is in tact and that the car moves out so fast.
Maybe you could play even dumber, if it's not too late.
"Cylinders? well, uh, I dunno, when I was leaning over the fender changing the spark plugs there were 4 of them in a row so I guess that's what they call a straight 4?"
Just be sure the thing is what he says it is. It's the oldest trick in the book to claim to have something wimpy. Years ago a buddy had a Chevy Nova, think it was about a '68. They had little number plates by the turn signal. He removed the "350" and replaced it with one that said "307".
Suggest the two of you go to the local track. You each pay your way in, and you each give a third party an amount equal to what you paid to get in. Winner gets the cash - so when you beat him you get to enjoy a night of racing for free!
True, GA's are quick, but I have raced one with a 15 pack Van full of people, he started out about 1 car length ahead of me, (the light had just turned green). I did not have the intent of racing this guy. But it just so happened that he didn't like to be passed by a 2007 Chevy van. My front bumper was right in line with his back bumper. As we passed him everyone began to wave. I will never forget the expression on this guys face, Priceless. After hitting 105mph I backed off. True story, it was great. If that van can take that POS, my 90' vet will drift circles around it all day long.
But in most cases guys like that are not worth wasting the fuel.
this is a classic example of a hater. some grand ams came with the quad 4 engine which were faster than its other engine options. but its still a slow car. i would bet titles.
Talk him into going to the track and racing for pinks or a solid chunk of money. Get a nitrous system put in the car before you go, just to be sure you will win and when you do it will be payed off. At the end of the day you will come away with a free day at the track, some extra power when you wan tit and either a daily driver or some cash.

I had a '90 GA with the Quad 4 for 10 years. It was a great car; zippy, and fun to drive, but nowhere near the hp and torque of my LT1.

TXUSAF I guess you and I are in the same group.. Im pretty sure I have never owned a vehicle anyone could say "Needed the carbon blown out of it" and I cant recall ever being the guy in the left lane holding folks up..
At what point did I miss the attach point for the common sense cart on my 25+ year old sports car.. that makes no damn sense to own anyway??
(official disclaimer: No I do not condone street racing in the YouTube 140 mph in heavy traffic stupid sense .. but a lil spirited driving yea,,,,,mayyyybe. )
