Why do you have to take the engine out every 15k miles? I'm assuming it is because you can't get to something with the engine in place? Or do they have to tear the engine apart every 15k miles?

It's the regular service, which involves getting at things that mean you have to remove the engine. There's no actual full engine disassembly.
I used to work at a car auction and i got to drive almost every car out there. i drove a ferrari 599 out on the road and they are very fast cars, so are the lamborghini murcielagos they will snap ur neck off if your not ready !!!
$20K in A C4 ZR-1 would make a car that could run with about anything. 427 stroker LT-5 or a 441 LT-5 would produce 550+ rear wheel HP. A 550 only runs a 12.2 to 12.4 qtr and my 92 Z has posted those times with only headers and a ported intake.
Don't get me wrong, Ferrari'\s are incredible cars, but you could certainly build a very competive C4 for the cash. Hell you can pick up a 05 Mercedes CL600 for $30K these days with 495hp and 590ftlbs of torque(boosted 12 cyl) that can run will most Ferraris.
Would you attract the attention a Ferrari does, nope....could your run with one most of their higher production cars....certainly.
Some people will pay anything for a name plate. Porsche owners do it every day. Is the base 911 really worth $87,00? Is a base Boxer really worth $47,000. IMO these cars are not comparable to a base C6 let along a Z06 or ZR1. Is a 599 worth $320,000, when a ZR1 out preforms it ? These exotics carry a certain prestige to those at the local country club. Its a statement. I got money. I don't drive a Chevrolet. A friend of mine owns a detailing business. One of his regular customers has a 911 Carrera. Was $90,000 and did nor even come with floor mats. When you sit inside you swear your in a Volkswagen of some kind. But I am sure its impressive to those who live in the circle of wealth. A relative of mine is wealthy and his wife wanted a Corvette. Her husband would not allow it so instead she drives a new AMG SL. No way his wife is going to be seen in a stinken Chevrolet.
grab a pontiac fiero, chev v-8 conversion kit ('mild' 350 will suffice), shiny wheels, some fiberglass body add-on bits, and a couple of 'my pony' emblems...result will be faster than a 'fairy-eerie', draw more attention (thx to shiny wheels), and be repairable with parts low $ anywhere...you can even buy insurance for a pontiac...99% of general public will believe you paid more for it than their house is worth, 100% of MMTB (more money than brains) types will be impressed.

Which is why unmolested Fieros are going to be worth a lot of money in a couple of decades - there will be hardly any left.
BTW if people think there is a vette tax, take a foreign sports car in, you get in to the thousands real fast with just tune up and maint.
My step dad has several types of these cars.
my other sports car is an mga, which also drives amazingly well in the snow (if u dont mind freezing to death). it's been restored, but has needed parts from time to time, which seem to be alot more expensive than american cars

I've owned several Fieros, two at the moment....one of which is an 88 coupe with a V8, the other a stock 86 GT fastback. They are a hoot to drive, and get a lot of attention. It is quite inexpensive to build a very fast Fiero, and if emulating Italian sports cars is your thing, there are plenty of body kits.....or find an original Mera and do the V8 swap.
I do disagree on one minor point....I don't think they will ever be worth a substantial amount of money. The only exception would be a "new" Indy Pace Car (still under MSO....they do exist), a new condition Mera, or a very low mile factory yellow T-Top 88 GT. There were just too many Fieros built.....and there are still an abundance of stock specimens left. In a couple of decades, maybe not....but the public at large views them as the Corvair of the 80's.
Fact is, 99% of the public wouldn't know the difference between a real Ferrari and a (properly) modified Fiero. And you could build it right for pennies compared to the real thing. And be faster than the real thing....and be able to maintain and repair it cheaply.
Anyone ever driven one? We are in Vegas for the week and I have seen 2 different red verts on the road.
I sat in one at a dealer in San Antonio once.
They sure sound nice when they get the rpms singing.
Why are we even talking about this in a vette forum?
Because we talk about Vettes over on Ferrarichat.
Love 'em all. Dad has a new Z06, I have a 59 Vette and a Ferrari. EVERY one of those cars will induce a permanent smile on your face for different reasons.
I always wanted a Mondial. Don't see too many 2+2 Ferraris. The hard tops were ugly, but the verts are just gorgeous...to me anyway. Still don't want to know what the maintenance fees would be.
