Oh I'd never get rid of the vette, but if I wanted to carry, say two kids...that'd be a fun car to do it. Well, till they got to be about 12 and they no longer fit. Of course I'd have to have $25K just laying around and nothing better to do with it.
J.D. I have been looking at the 348 car too, they are cool lookin (imo) too. the parts are stupid high$$. a tubi exhaust is near 4000.00 and the header are a cool 7000.00. that was enough for mee to kill my plans for one. a clutch assy is over 5000.00 and the oem t/o bering is 600.00. performance ? the have no power steering, no power brakes. the early cars had valve guide issues. and performance upgrade are not what we are used to with a small block chevy. i spoke with a guy yesterday that works on a vette lot and said he had got to drive one for about a week. it was awesome sounding, got plenty of looks and felt like a big gocart and that most c4S will run with it or pull it.
308 and 328 are extremly expensive to maintain cause you have to bring down all the rear assembly..... to change plugs....
Boxers are about the same price....
456 engine is ok but the rest is a nightmare.
360-430 is average.
Best is 550 or 575 if not with the robotic gearbox.
??????
No you don't. I can change a 308's plugs in 10 minutes.
A Mondial's powertrain comes out the bottom on a cradle, but a 308 comes out the top. There is no "rear assembly".
And you clearly have never priced Boxer parts. , or noticed that you need 50% more of everything than you need for a V8 3XX series car.
I always wanted a Mondial. Don't see too many 2+2 Ferraris. The hard tops were ugly, but the verts are just gorgeous...to me anyway. Still don't want to know what the maintenance fees would be.
Shakedown, I love black Mondials. Great choice. Even the coupes look good in black because the dark color disguises the black trim on the butresses and bumpers.
Why do you have to take the engine out every 15k miles? I'm assuming it is because you can't get to something with the engine in place? Or do they have to tear the engine apart every 15k miles?
Cam belts and that is for the 348 and up. Yes maintenance is very costly from the dealership but what dealer isn't more
As for driving my favorte drive was 1961 SWB GTO. Yep the C4 was faster but there something to be said about sitting behind 12 cylinder Ferrari.
I love Ferraris! They are auto works of art. I almost bought a 66 330 GT @ 25 years ago and should have. The amintenance will kill ya so although I want one with 3 young kids my wallet is happy with my 2 Vettes. One day maybe I could get a Testarossa...I loved that one!
A friend of mine has a 1999 355 F1 Spider. He's driven the 'Vette, and I've taken the Ferrari out on a few occasions.
We have never had the chance to line them up, but they seem to be pretty evenly matched. The F1 gearbox is fun, but I still prefer a stick.
The Corvette has more comfortable seats, the Ferrari handles better (being mid-engine), and as much as I like the sound of a small block, the wail of an Italian V-8 behind your head at 8500rpm is nothing short of spectacular.
As far as the motors go, the Corvette has lots of low-end grunt, the Ferrari does not. It has a 5 valve per cylinder 3.5L motor with a short stroke and is very high strung. It is meant to REV! Like I said, I imagine a drag race between the LT4 and the 355 would be very close.
As much as I like the Ferrari, and as beautiful as it is, the frequency of maintenance and the cost of parts is just too much for me (at least at this point in my life). My 'Vette is a daily driver...You simply can't do that with a Ferrari.
