Why not use a torque wrench and torque them to specs? Or maybe you should pull it and add some sealant too. Dang vac leaks-they can lead us on a chase that never seem to end-until we find them.

Maybe I should say I found a problem.
Drivers side runner where the cold start injector is.
I can't tell exactly weather it's the runner or the cold start tube but the leak was so big that when I tightened it up a little it started whistling. It was silent before i touched it.
Problem now is I'm afraid to tighten the torx bolts for the runners much more for fear of stripping the intake manifold or breaking the bolt.

Tell me to crank on it and I will.

I'm having a very big beer now and will have another look later.
My weekend has just started and even though I have not fixed my problem I feel pretty good because at least now I think I know what it is.
Add to that all my knew knowledge of idle speed, IAC valves and the TPS and has been a good week.

Any tips on how to correct this would be greatly appreciated. Other than just cranking on the bolts.

Hopefully that is the problem. Cant wait to see her run in the 13's.

Took me a while to find it. I guess because of where it is.
I think I used my entire new propane torch tank, then I switched to WD40.
I have my nose in the FSM now but I'm having trouble finding the torque specs for these bolts.
I do have a feeling I'm close now if not past already. Once I figure out the torque specs I'll try tightening more first (if I can), if this does not work I will go to sealant.
If anyone knows the torque specs page for this let me know.

Where did you come from?
Did your mechanic call you back yet?

I'm pretty sure I don't have much room here.
i really didn't want to take the plennum and runners off again but if that's what i need to do...it will be done. But not tonight.
Heck it's easier than setting my valve lash and I did that again.
Will sealant solve the problem if i can't tighten any more?

I owe all of you guys one, Rick, Agent, Mseven, CFI, tigmaned and tequilaboy. Your all on my Christmas card list.
Seriously, I'm afraid to get too excited until i have it fixed.
Things are definately looking up though. This is one of those things that a mechanic could have found in two minutes or two days. I'm glad I did it myself. (Myself with lots of help).

My #40 torx bit was only rated at 32 lbs.
I'm going to tak it all apart and put some sealant on it to get the best seal I can.
The more I listen to the air leak the more I think it has always been there and I thougth it was normal.
Time to repair it.
Thanks again.

You my friend have a GREAT ATTITUDE I wouldn't be to concerned about the torque rating of the torx bit.And there's alot of places where torque specs. are called for whereas I don't use them-like spark plugs for example-call me lazy, but after so many years of using torque wrenches and lifting weights I have a pretty good feel for some things.Good Luck and please let us know.

I have my plennum and leaking runner off.
Now I have 2 questions.
1 What kind of sealant should I use with this gasket on the runner so it won't leak air any more?
2 There is this thing under the plenum that two vacuum hoses attach to. I think it has something to do with the egr.
The hoses attach on the outside but it looks like something should attach on the inside. The thing is I have nothing attached to it oposite the vacuum lines.
Can someone tell me if I'm missing something here? I don't want to put the runners and plennum back on if there is something missing.

Thanks.

I think it's the egr solonoid.

I think you're right, one vac line from egr to one side of egr solenoid, on the other side of the solenoid you have another vac line-total of 2
vac lines. I think I'd just put some RTV sealant around the bolt threads
and reinstalled it-

On mine I have two Vac lines beside each other on the same side.
The rubber boot that holds them to the egr solonoid is shared by the two lines. right above them is the electrical connection.
Completely oposite the two vac lines looks like a connector with nothing hooked up to it.
If yours has a vac line hooked up to the inside (back), where does it run to?
I didn't wait anyway.
I have everything back together. Just letting the liquid gasket stuff dry before I test it.
It looks like the leak was at my cold start injector. The bracket that holds it to the runner was bent. The bolt was likely in tight but it wasn't snug all the way around the injector because of it being bent.
I straightned it out best I could and sealed it. Hope it works.
I'm having a ****** of a time getting the other end hooked back into the fuel rail. I'm actually on my computer now because i had to walk away from it.

I'm sure it will only take 5 seconds when I go back to it.

On my 86 egr solenoid I have two vacuums. Both hook onto one side of it facing the alternator. One hose comes from the bottom of the TB and the other comes from the egr valve. On the other side of the solenoid there is a place that looks like a hose should be there but isn't. Is it required to put some type of sealent on the plenum and runner gaskets or just the gaskets themselves?

Perfect, so mine is normal or both of our cars are missing something.

Thanks, I didn't notice it when I took everything apart. When I was puting everything back together I thought I was missing something.

Sorry, missed your question.
When I took mine apart there was no sealant so I assume just the gaskets are fine.
I'm not the expert though and I had a leak. Sealant may be the answer.
I only ended up puting it around the cold start injector because that's where my leak was.
