Yeah, I got to thinking after reading this thread. I just replaced the intake manifold gasket and upper intake gaskets and I used sealant on the manifold but not the plenum/runners.

When are we doing the pulleys?
I may have this job done.
Haven't started the car yet, I want to make sure eveything is dry first.

Tercel?
Yeah, thanks for buying that off me to be your daily driver.

The hoses attach on the outside but it looks like something should attach on the inside. The thing is I have nothing attached to it oposite the vacuum lines.
Can someone tell me if I'm missing something here? I don't want to put the runners and plennum back on if there is something missing.

Thanks.
You have nothing missing. The "third fitting" is the opening for a dump valve for the vacuum. Without it, when the solenoid was closed cutting off the vacuum that activated the EGR valve, the EGR valve wouldn't close, because the vacuum would remain trapped between the, now closed, EGR solenoid and the EGR valve. When the EGR solenoid is de-energized, the dump valve opens to let air in and release the trapped vacuum to allow the EGR valve to open. If you look at it closely, you'll see some mesh or foam over the opening that acts as a tiny air filter for the air that is allowed to enter, and "break" the vacuum.

RACE ON!!!

PS. I hope my use of the word "valve" doesn't jinx me.

Thanks for the explanation CFI.
I figured with my luck lately that something was likely missing especially because i didn't wait to find out before I put it all back together.

I'm going to go start the car now and see if I can set the idle.
Here comes the moment of truth.

Battling a similar problem myself now.

Just installed my sr and have apparently fixed some existing vacuum leaks in the process (go figure).

Now since the air flow through the MAF has increased below 1000 rpm (now 13.3 gm/sec @ 1000 rpm), the load variable (maf/rpm) is also increased to the point which causes spark advance to drop, which causes rpm to drop even more, which causes load to increase even further -> engine goes into a death spiral then stalls.

If the load and spark advance values are stable -> smooth running.

This is easy to see in datamaster. Look at load, rpm and spark advance.

Now I just need to burn a chip with a more stable spark advance vs. load table for the 400, 600, 800 and 1000 rpm rows.

My point is that you may not be able to correct your condition using mechanical means only without custom tuning.
Good luck.

stall saver spark should be intervening to help, but may not be enough

I believe 87 rag has fewer mods, K&N etc, simple things-stock cam, so I
wouldn't think he'd have to worry about a custom chip-whereas you've changed the cam-which changes the playing field.

WWWOOO----HHHOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Finally!!!!
Okay guys, the car is running great. I need to turn the idle down a bit but the car is running great, no air leak, lots of power, no searching idle.
Sorry I didn't get back right away. I had to catch up on some yard work.
Giant bonfire, burned enough leaves they could have filled my garage, grass seeded back yard, fertilized front yard.

Tequilaboy...I'm happy I don't have the same problem you do because I don't even understand it.

Thank you all so much.
Car went sideways a little going into second. It's chirped before but it never actually fishtailed. It's an auto.

Keep your eyes open for my upcoming threads:

700R4, what does this mean?
and
Heater core replacement done, where were these parts supposed to go?

Thanks again.

Yup,
I need to update my sig. I went with the poor man's cam. I changed the rockers to 1.6:1 roller tip.

Here is an update. With a little help from Pete K. I fixed my tranny shifting problem and hit the the track today.
My times were the best I have seen. Previous best was 14.32. Since then I added a shift improver kit, 1.6:1 roller tip rockers and put my cat back on the car. Today I ran a best of 13.908 and a worst of 13.962.
The car is running perfectly and I am ecstatic.
