Default Air Intake system question.

I am looking for an air intake system.

I was about to call TPIS today, and order there system, but there online catalogue does that show that product anymore.

I have been looking for about 30 mins now, and have only come up with a few systems. Curious which one is the best unit to buy.

And I have to have a front licence plate.

http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb....Z5Z5Z50000050F $279.95

http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb....Z5Z5Z50000050F $199.95

http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...2&dept_id=1758 $299.99

I am also switching from MAF to Speed Density, and I need to figure something out in regards to a coupler from the air box to the throttle body. Is there anything aftermarket made for my application?

I need to feed the 421 with some more air. Are any of these products any good? I will be calling TPIS today to see if there unit is still for sale!

I tossed my SLP unit for the TPIS part. It tended to block the radiator opening and I ran hot. Call TPIS and see if they have some still. If not I'll start looking online too.

air intakes dont really do much for a C4 and the only system that has been proven to help at all is the one that replaces the front license plate filler.

Just use a stock Air filter box and Air Coupler tube from a Speed Density L98.

Cut out the air filter lid and install any high performance filter you want and it'll be enough air for your 421.

I've read that the stock setup will support up to 400hp. The claw looks cool though.

I have the SLP unit. I dremmeled the thing like crazy - such that it is just the back scoop, sides removed as much as I could and cut up as high as I could on the front opening. It made a big difference from a 45 roll on up. Do not even entertain the TPIS thing - they sent me a used one, with scratches, cracks, abrasion marks - Jim had to "check my sales record" to see if they'd take it back. I've mentioned this story times before, that piece is probably eliminated because it is cheaply made thin fiberglass, that'd bust if you leaned on it....

Thanks for those comments.

Do you have any pics of your modifying work to the SLP unit? I really don't want to dremel something that is new, but if I have too then I will....

I cut out the filter lit about 5 years ago, and it has a K&N, but I don't think I am far off saying that the 421 will need more air then the stock 350.

I would like to do something to improve air flow, I just don't know what.

Hi,
Let me tell you a few things.......
1) I got the whole TPIS deal. Headers,Prom, intake, injectors, Throttle body on a 421 10.5:1 Custom Comp cams (close to their zzx cam).
2) I put the engine together 6 months ago and it's still not right. Jim is a terriffic guy so far as nice goes, but I'm really having a hard time getting the tune right. 6 chips later, and its pig rich at idle and lean off idle. It's like pulling teeth getting a prom made.

3) Complainng aside, Jim said that the k & n with the cut lid was plenty of air for the application. "That's what I'd do" is what he told me.

Moral of this reply: You might be ok with the air lid, but don't let them tune the chip. Get it done locally.

FYI.

I called and spoke to Jim today. He advised me that the stock application does not flow nearly enough for my attended 421 "approx. 550hp".

I asked Jim a few questions, and he told me that on the C4 race cars they used a Black Wing Intake from the C5, and fabrirated it to work.

FYI. TPIS does not make the air intake system for C4's as of now, but Jim mentioned that they might be available for next year.

What to do, and what to get? Damn it..........lol.

On a side note. I have yet to meet anyone with a fully modded motor like yours that was happy with there tunes. I have no clue who does there tunes, but maybe it's time to look somewhere else!

You said 421 cubic inches?

I will send you a pm.

For years I ran a system that was ordered from either MAD or Ecklers that was basically the factory system flipped over and enlarged with the later model (larger) K&N with a ram air vent that was down inside the radiator area.

It worked well, but sold it to someone on here for like $275 a few years back.

It doesn't work in FI applications, so no longer needed.

If you could find a system like that, I think you would be satisfied.

The stock system actually flows pretty well:

This is exactly what the guys have basically been doing with the C5 and C6. In fact some did exactly as you stated. They took the Air filter housing and flipped it over. This is the principle behind the Vortex Rammer.
