Everything they did amounted to the variation a stock car could display on a chassis dyno given different Density Altitudes (weather changes) throught the day or over the corse of week(s).
The Editor must of needed an artical pretty badly.
Will
I gained more dyno horsepower for less than a dollar and 2 minutes work once.
It is easily repeatable, on a hot muggy dyno day we threw a bunch of Ice on the intake. Waited a few minutes and did another run.. voila instant horsepower increase ... But dyno numbers really don't matter..
But that's the point.... At least they have some data for the arguments that these things (don't) "work". I think you have to give them some latitude that they knew enough to normalize the environment when doing their runs. The k&n filter test is at least better than reading most of the arguments you hear for/against them.
It's true. They DID create objective results and that is better reporting than, "I used to be able to peel rubber for 10', but with my air foil and throttle enhancer, I now do 25' peel-outs!"
What I don't like about the article is that they spent ~$300 and produced no meaningful gains. I mean, they got a little something, but in today's world, the world that they referred to with 1000 hp LSx's, the 13 or so hp they got is basically nothing. If you were a regular joe and read that article, what would you think? "You can't do anything w/an LTx!" It reads like yerbasic CFI mods article; FPR, RR's, underdrives, a Hypertech and air filters and your CFI can make 215 (c)hp! Articles like that really make these cars look lame.
I wish they had taken that same $300, and bought a good roller cam, and stuck that in. Then you'd be looking at real gains at least...with that amount of money.

This type of reporting is why I dropped my subscriptions several years ago. Rarely do they have any real mods. When have they tested a real build with AFR heads, Stroker kits, decent cams etc. Its usually a set of edelbrock heads, cam, intake that is very little more then stock.
And of course, they now do way more C-6 LS type stuff now. For me the forums are the best source of info. and if I had to pick magazines it would be hot rod , car craft etc. but that's just my opinion.

Agreed! We're looking at what 2%? Not enough to do anything...
You ought to consider it. It is a lot of fun and a lot of good guys down there!!
I hadn't seen that... Looks fun, but I gotta get mine running right first.. I'm chasing an intermittent jumpy idle... So you're down in Manassas? Join any of the local clubs?
No, I haven't. Mine had been down for over 4 years and just got it going this past fall. That's not until july, Blackharleyman, and Rklessdriver may be coming. I have gone to this in the past a few times and Steve (Allthrottleandsomebottle) always makes sure everyone has a good safe time. Besides, if your miss is at idle it wont effect you down there!
Good article. I thought those were good gains for the $108 dollars invested. Even with the additial parts not adding any power they allow you the opportunity to fine tune later modifications.
