@84 4+3 was it past the 60 day return point? Also, yeah, last time I checked they had a terrible rating with the BBB but as you said, they are no longer even accredited. I only order stuff from there when I have to. Normally it's fine, like Eckler's was the only place I could find the main air conditioning compressor hose I needed. I'm just scared to order something larger like this from them.
The first time it wasn't. But I had to completely remove it and send it to them for inspection to determine if there was actually a problem even though I sent them photos too. Summit sends one out first and asks questions later like a normal company lol.
@84 4+3 yeah. I understand Eckler's not being a normal company. I had to wait 7 months for my Z51 Bilstein shocks but maybe it wasn't their fault because they were on backorder everywhere else as well.
Yeah
I don’t mind dealing with Jegs but it sounds like you need someone to inspect it before it’s shipped. Does Buccaneer have any other ideas he really is a very helpful bloke. Also you could ask some questions over on the thirdgen board. There are lots of guys there with crossfire F bodies. Also how bad are we talking with the renegade? The standard intake required a lot of machining and even then there is only so much you can do with it. A poorly machined renegade might be fixable with minimum machine work. Maybe Summit will sell you the he best of the bad ones cheap.
Or like you say you can leave it. I only did the engine work on mine after it threw a timing chain. These early C4s are fun to drive in their lower HP configuration. They had plenty of torque, low weight, great handling and at 205 HP they made more power then most of the C3s built after the mid 70s. Driving it and enjoying it is a good option.
I've read through this tread with a lot of interest. My 92 year old dad recently gave me his bone stock '84 4+3 Z51, original owner, 85k miles. Runs perfectly fine. I've been toying with the idea of keeping it mostly stock, but perking it up a touch with a Renegade, 1.6 rockers, fuel pump and advancing timing. But frankly, it's a nice enough car to drive as is, accelerates through the gears nicely and I really don't need it to perform any better than it already does. Just hard to resist some bolt on mods I could pretty easily do myself. But reading about all the manufacturing problems - on an apparently well engineered product - are really making me wonder why screw around with it.
It's just a bummer these quality problems have apparently been so widespread.
I had no problem with my renegade but if you are happy with the car just keep it and drive it. The L83 has plenty of torque and is geared with that in mind.
@swamp21 yeah the quality control issues are very unfortunate because I know the intake itself performs well if you get a good one.
@GregMartin At this with point I'm probably just going to leave it. If I want a faster car then I should just buy a faster car.
Hey James I was wondering how your 84 was going. Yeah I’m sure there are plenty of affordable corvettes in the US maybe an LT4 or a C5. I would keep the 84 and just enjoy it for a while.
@GregMartin It's going great. I'm home from college this weekend so today my friend broke his '75 out of the shed even though it doesn't have bumpers and his side pipes aren't fully attached. We cruised around town and did some racing. It was fun although I'll have to be careful when he gets it done in case he decides to do anything to the intake or carb. One of my friends in the military has a 2010 2SS Camaro and he hasn't been home on the same weekend as me to race but if he is I'm a bit scared. I told him we could race when I get an LS. XD That's the thing about the '84, it's a ton of fun to drive but it's not going to win many races that don't involve quite a few corners.
@Gibbles lol that's great. I'm just scared of V6 sedans and the Honda Civic Type R. I'd be ashamed of myself if I ever lost to a Civic but I know it's faster.
A 2SS Camaro will be a very tall order. Even with the engine mods in my 84 it is no match for my 2008 6.0 LS SS Commodore. An 84 should blitz a 75 but most of those aren’t stock anymore. When someone in a fast looking rice burner is looking for a race I just look down my nose at them as if to say “are you joking this is a corvette “.

I burned a type R in my Colorado. Put about 3 trucks on him because he was sleeping and he never made it back up lol. They're not that fast lol.
@84 4+3 They're supposed to be quite a bit faster than the '84. Was it a type R and are you sure the guy in the Civic knew you were racing?
They run 13.8 on a good day. Mild work on an 84 you're there. He slept for 2 seconds, that's all it takes. And we did race because he was so salty he got burned by a truck he drove around me at the red light and blew it to make the left lol. Even did a neutral drop and rev as he went around, definitely a type r. Its oddly fast for its size.
@84 4+3 My '84 has a full Melrose exhaust system but I don't think it's to 13.8. I would have had to got a good Renegade intake for that.
Mine is probably mid to high 13s but it hasn’t been proved. I think terminal velocity over 400 meters is a better indicator anyway.
TBH the advantage these cars have is cornering. They could handle roughly 1G or corner load back in the day on the **** tires available at the time. That’s still pretty impressive by today’s standards. When I get someone traveling a little too close I like to put on a cornering clinic..

I think at this point, I'm just going to leave mine stock. It's survived this long in this state, I'm 61 and not going to get in any impromptu drag races with anybody. And anything I'd be likely to do, short of putting an LS in it, would still leave it easily beatable by any current performance car. I'm also the original owner of a (mostly stock) '83 Trans Am w/ 5 speed and LG4. Same thing, over the years I've thought of putting a 350 crate engine in it but never could rationalize it. I just try to appreciate it for what it is. And the Corvette is a lot faster than the Trans Am.
I will say, all the comments about the sketchy Renegade build quality helped push me to this decision. Doesn't mean I won't change my mind down the road, but for now I'm going to respect the originality of it.
This is a great place to be isn't it? Thank you all for taking the time to chime in with a blast of knowledge. I am thinking Renegade. I have followed this intake for a while in this forum as well as others. It really is a great bolt on! I am frustrated reading about all the quality issues. I work in a manufacturing environment and this quality would NEVER pass! So I am at a crossroad, A) I spend the money and get it! Or B) I port an extra one I have. I do live near the Summit location in Ohio. I could stop there and physically look at what they have for stock. Either option has to be done! Poor thing is bound, gagged and barely alive. But...we can fix this. Once again thank you all and hope to share some success soon!
@BlackVetter if you can check out the Ohio warehouse and make sure you get a good one then I would go for it. If you can't get your hands on a good one then I would leave it alone. Also, Idk what happened to Grumpy's forum.
