Awesome, thanks for the tip. Plastics are actually not too bad. I hit them with ultra black trim restorer.
and yes, knock sensor seems pretty straight forward as long as access is not too much of a pain, but I think it's fine. Just a pain to do everything lying on the back in the dirt.
I still don't know how the key start was disabled. I guess I'll find out soon. If nothing happens when I turn the key then I'll have a problem. But fingers crossed. So far this car has been cooperating nicely.
Ok.
hooked up battery.
Good news is that it doesn't spark any longer when connecting. All lights, switches, radio etc work.
Bad news: car doesn't crank. I can hear the relay click but nothing else. Also, I noticed there is no security light any more. It was there before I started the entire process.
I read a lot about vat system even though I have not bothered yet to really dig into it. I might have that problem?
unless something in the steering column was disconnected?
Anyway, good news is that nothing exploded when I connected battery. Lol.
Just looked at pics that I took back then and it looks like I may have missed one wire that should go on the starter as well. Looks fused.
Possible that it got stuck somewhere when I routed the wires down and I therefore didn't see/connect. Would be an easy fix.
Edit: no that wasn't it. I just had a look and that wire is already connected.
Oh, lol.
I think the ones I ordered are gray/silver. Got KYB .
I ordered the same ones. Other forum members told me they aren't the best-while that may be true, they've improved the ride in my car considerably. My wife will now ride in it (she refused before), which is a win for me!

Reviews I read were good and they are not too crazy expensive. And I'm sure they are better than what I have now, which are most likey the originals.
Thanks.
Hm, I can't really tell what goes where due to all the wire shields you have.
I am basically trying to see:
How many wires are connected to the starter
What are their colors
What posts/studs are they connected to.
This is how I currently have it connected, looking at it from front:
difficult to see but it appears as if there is a third post, 'not used' in my hand drawing.
When I removed everything, I figured I'd just remove everything without taking note. Access sucked and I just unbolted everything without looking. Didn't think it would be this difficult. Which it actually isn't, but maybe it is...
Had a few mins to check:
green / white wire going to clutch safety gets power when turning key.
Will get under there tomorrow morning to see if power is going through the safety switch.
A bit tricky to get to.
Could check purple wire directy at charger but I don't have anyone cranking while I check..
Spent more time this morning. Looking at the starter, the purple wire was hooked up to the R post.
can't tell what the other one is saying but I swapped it over.
Still nothing.
I will now go through everything step by step starting with purple wire and see if it gets juice.
The cable from the battery supplies starter with power, so that's all good.
havent had the courage to jump the starter yet.
Success.
I jumped the neutral safety switch and car now cranks.
Hasn't started yet but that's the next step. Didn't crank for too long and fuel probably needs to fill the rails etc.
For now I'm happy about it cranking!!!
Interesting fact: the hatch release in the center console is hooked up to the same circuit. I noticed that it stopped working.
After bypassing the clutch safety switch the hatch release now works again.
Had a few mins and tried to start but no luck yet.
Cranks fine now but have to charge battery over night before I continue to troubleshoot in morning.
Getting very close
Well, still working on it...
Have spark, have power to injectors and even pulled distributor again to double check timing and appears to be good. Still no luck. Have a fuel pressure gauge on the way. Thinking about getting noid lights as well but not sure if needed since I have power to injectors?
Double checked all spark wires and they are in correct sequence. Here a pic of the distributor orientation. The little gold dot (on the base) indicates the #1 post position.
Took a break from starting issue and replaced both front shocks. The old ones were completely dead and did not even try to extend.
I actually went to pepboys to get a fp gauge. And yeah, no pressure. Gets up to above 40 then drops immediately. Replacing the regulator membrane as I am typing this.
Hope that helps, also without your motor running the fuel pump will only run for a few seconds and then shut off.
Didnt help.
Still drop in pressure.
Scratching head. Car ran before I started, must be something small I am overlooking.
Yes, fuel pump primes for about 2 seconds.
I rebuilt the fuel rail but don't see any leaks. So I'd assume the seals are tight. There is also no fuel smell.
