Had he been armed, would it have done him much good. Drawing on a drawn gun?? Given a choice between drawing on a drawn gun or giving up the keys, he'd have been better off giving up his keys.
You just gotta laugh at these "glad I have a concealed weapons permit" comments. What are they going to do? Out draw the gun that is already pointed at them? The more likely result is to get your azz shot just a little quicker if you do try to pull it in a situation like this.
RandW, glad it turned out OK but you were lucky this time.
I live in Alabama and have a license to carry. I try to be very cautious in parking lot situations. When I walk outside the mall I slid my hand in my pocket and onto my S&W .38 cal ultralight. If I have to ruin my jacket so be it, but I have no qualms about ridding society of a scum bag if someone draws down on me and trys to rob me.

Trying to pull a holstered concealed handgun out faster than a person can pull a trigger is lunacy. Give 'em the keys, and immediately call the police and remember what the punk looks like. (Car jacking with a weapon is a Federal Offense. Law passed 1992, upheld by SCOTUS in 1999 by a 7-2 decision).

I understand what you are saying but I would move and draw.
Anyone who is stupid enough to point a loaded (gotta assume) weapon at someone is stupid or careless enough to use it.
There isn't anyway I am going to trust some felon not to shoot me.
I'm not talking about machismo.
But no way am I letting him decide whether I live or not without me putting up a fight.
You have a big pair man!I hate people that want to do other people harm for what they have i worked hard for my car, bike, truck etc..... Why can't they! If u can't afford it DREAM&SAVE DREAM&SAVE glad you'r o.k .

To tell the truth, if I had a gun and I knew how to use it, I'd probably be dead right now. Keys in one hand, bag in the other, his gun in my gut. Stunned because this can't be happening, it's Sat. morning, the sun is out, I'm enjoying myself too much! What I did was very stupid, again I was not thinking, just reacting. I despise punks, so my reaction was I will not give in to them. My message here was beware and pay attention to your surroundings, no matter where you live. Scum has crept into all corners of our country. If I was paying attention this may have been averted and I'd have no story to tell. On the bright side, kudos to the Elk Grove police dept., professional and thorough And to all our LEO's, sometimes we forget you do so much more than just give us tickets

I have a concealed carry permit, and you will never find me without my sub compact .45. I would have given him the keys and when he got in the car he would have had a hydrashock through his head.
Glad to hear your ok.

I do Stephen ... You are blessed Rand. I'm not a religious guy, but I am spiritual. It wasn't your time. I've dealt with this crap in the past and the worse thing (most common) is the guy holding the gun "accidentally" fires, because he /or she are so nervous.
I'm not even gonna make any gun toting jokes here. This is some serious $*it.
I'm glad you're ok my friend. Everyone please pay attention to those little hairs on the back of your neck. Please. Two pennies dropped.

You can laugh if you want to, but if you're carrying a weapon concealed, at least if the opportunity presents itself, you have the chance to defend yourself. I agree, give up the keys, but then shoot the bastard in the head if the opportunity show itself...
Just because you choose not to protect yourself and your family, dosent give cause for you to ridicule those of us that do.

I agree to a point but, I have to add this ... who says I would pull it? It fires the same thru my jacket pocket.
Why is it that the scumbags can carry and the good guys can't?? Glad it worked out for you. Crap like this ticks me off!! This is precisely why i'm not fo gun cintrol. i'll bet they were on parole too, damn crooks i hate'um.

You ever tried firing a revolver through a jacket pocket? If the hammer catches and does not go to full travel or if it "bites" the lining of the pocket the pistol will not fire. Firing a semiauto through a jacket pocket would seem to present another set of problems too.
I once had a permit for concealed carry and I am debating having it renewed. When I had it, I also would walk to my car with my hand on my pistol. Ruger SP101 357 mag, or my S&W model 915, or my Colt 45. Whether or not you have a chance to pull it will depend on a lot of things, not the least of which is the distance between yourself and your attacker.
For those of you who say you would have shot him as he was making off in the car, do know that threr is a good chance that you would have wound up in jail for murder or manslaughter. Once the threat is over and your life is no longer in danger, you have no right to use deadly force unless the attacker is an immediated threat to hurt someone else.

The thing you have to understand is this.
He probably does not want to kill you, but he will, if he "feels" that he "has to." He just wanted the car. If he had simply wanted to kill the original poster, he'd be dead already.
If he just wanted to kill you, he'd have just shot you, without uttering a word, and taken the keys out of your hand as you lay dying.
He no doubt decided that it was not worth a murder rap to take the car. That tells me that he very likely never intended to, or didn't have the cojones to pull the trigger in the first place. Unless "scared" into it by the "victim" putting up a fight.
Elk Grove area, Laguna Creek. Arden and definatly Florin I would have been more cautious. I foolishly felt safe Thanks for all your good thoughts, guys.

Wallet guns are don't have hammers. They are designed to be fired while in the "wallet" holster. Plus, panic makes bad things happen, i.e. snags, etc. Practice, practice practice works, but the best thing is mental preparedness. That's why I said trust your instinct.
FWIW, I'm just glad Rand was hurt or killed.
Otherwise, I totally agree with your outlook EB, believe me.
