I'm sorry Bob, but I don't have the answer to that. You'll just have to do some experimenting. I'm fairly certain that a red tinted incandescent bulb will be dimmer than standard clear. If that's factual, red LED's may actually illuminate brighter with your clear lenses.
Good luck with that,
Richard
Richard, I spoke to a buddy last night, he seems to think a regular red bulb that lights from all directions will work better with the silver reflecting material inside the housing. I might just try this as I think his idea has some merit. A LED bulb only shines forward so it cannot use the reflective portion (behind the bulb) like a standard filiment bulb can. As you say trial and error, i'll report back later this week which set-up works best. Thanks for the help. Bob
what about a small diameter red tail light being installed inside the vette one & made to fit behind
the clear corvette lens?
for a look you have the clear with a translucent/red tone behind it, then when it lights, it should be a typical enough glow?
Very similar to what my buddy said. I am using the factory housing and wires so I can just use a red bulb if i'm forced to. What I am trying to eliminate are 2 problems. 1st is just what your eyes see, I don't want to see any color behind the lens. I want it to be clear, if I use a standard red bulb, that will likely be seen even with all lights off. My second and most important issue is SAFETY. LEDs tend to bleed out and don't appear as bright as a standard bulb in sunlight, this is going to drive me nuts finding the answer. That said, I will come up with a SAFE solution.
Altho try this on, if you half-mirror (see thru mirror ) some flush mounts,
then your color/tonal variations are even more subtle and elegant.
... but do pump up the number of red leds or some ricer will back end u .
I'm afraid I don't understand. How would that work? The inside of the housing is a shiny silver color already. I think the direction that the LEDs shine (straight ahead) does not allow the reflection inside the lens to happen. A regular bulb lights from the entire glass surface, I believe thats why they "appear" to fill the housing when lit. Keep the help coming, this is going to be safe if it kills me.
Tried the red sleeve (goes over standard bulb) today. That works very well, even in sunlight. I'm going to try a real RED bulb tomorrow and see how that works, before I try the full RED LED...
Thanks Here is the white car I got the idea from. I fell in love the moment I saw it. His is painted white inside the housing. Mine I left silver inside as I thought it would match my car nicely.
Yup that's the one i was talking about in a previous post about your vette...His and yours both look
