The wave theory by dlp5000
Here is my take on the wave but first background.
It took me a long time comparitively speaking to come on over to be a vette owner as I previously owned a porsche and received waves from other porsche owners. Now I have been a vette owner for about 6 years and I have mixed responses from the wave and I believe it's about education and appreciating the heritage. vette owners should all understand that we are a select group and impart our experiences and the "vettettiqute" when we can. Understand however in this high tech world alot of folks get distracted with the ominprescent cell phone so apply that as a factor. Nearly all of the vette folks I've have met are warm and have really "earned" their vettes especially vets driving vettes like me. It harkens back to the salute we appreciate as veterans. In the end as long as safety permits, you should always return a salute.
Remember back in 1990, cruising around in a friend's '74 roadster. Everyone loved the classic shape, big fenders; wow a Stingray, etc. Many were not kind on the new fangled 'vette, aka C4. Guess it's all relative. Come to think of it, I don't even remember if we waved. To paraphrase the old saying - if you can remember the 80s and early 90s, you weren't there.
I wave at all vettes every year and model, and I don't get many waves in return its kind of depressing. oh well I'll just keep waving as long as someone waves it won't be dead :

Yea I wave all the time but it seems lately no one waves back and it kind of gets to me a little bit because it something special in my eye's that we have. Somehow we must send out flyers to every corvette owner's house to remind them of the wave! Better yet GM needs to make a commerical showing Vette owners waving to one another.

I told one of the salesmen at the local chevy place to inform new Vette owners about the wave. She laughed and said she does but most don't get it
In Louisiana we still wave and it is promoted by the clubs as well. Seems more waves come from club owners where a corvette is a life choice and not just another sports car, say a mustang or something.
I've had my C-5 almost 2 months now. The only other Vette owners that have waved have been chicks! NO problem with that! To heck with the hard tails around here. I just give them a snooty head nod........
I will have had my '99 coupe for five weeks this coming Sunday. Of all the Corvettes I've passed, so far only ONE person has waved. Was a great feeling getting that first wave. Haven't seen any older 'vettes (probably due to the time of year), pretty much just C5s and C6s. I look at the upcoming car - the drivers are all pretty clueless - either talking on their cell phones, trying to look important, etc. I have a feeling that in my particular area, most of the late model Corvette owners are the mid-life crises types and not real Corvette people. I'll keep looking.
Okay here's the thing. It comes down to education about tradition and safety. With todays high tech constantly on the cell phone world alot of people are distracted or as some of us vette owners have been known to do, are driving a tad bit agressively so at times a wave may get missed due to this. On the other hand, I don't believe it is necessarily snobish but a lack of education about the tradition of "the vette wave". I am a retired AF vet and I view the wave much like a do a salute. You are simply paying homage to another person who has something in common with you and passing along a time honored tradition. Some folks either don't get or will not get it. I earned mine much like most you did through a life time of paying dues so you better believe I appreciate what I have. This is quite a group we have and we ought to continue being stewards and impart that knowledge upon our peers. My wave will normally find ANY vette owner as long as I am able.

I was stationed out in Nellis 85-86. Keep passing on the tradition when you can. I sure hope sometime down the road me and "dark and lovely" can make it out that way before too long. I sure as hell will offer up a wave.
As a former MG owner, we used to wave so when we were broken down on the side of the road maybe another MG owner would stop and assist with parts, etc. Since newer cars are less likely to break down, maybe current C6 owners are former MG owners.
It could have something to do with where and when you see the non waver. If it is the every day on the way to work or on the way home some folks are not into checking out the other cars on the road with them. If it is a weekend and they still don't wave they are without an excuse.
Keep on wavein'
I have had amazing luck with the wave here. Granted the vette has been "up for winter" for four months and will probably be there for another two or so. There are not a bunch of vettes here, but I do get a waive back pretty much every time. Sorry to see all of the C6 guys are not on board with us. I really noticed the wave last summer at "Vettes on the Rockies" in Frisco, Colorado. There were hundreds and hundreds of vettes out and about and it seemed like you were constantly waiving. But EVERYBODY waived. Let's pull the stick out of the C6 guy's butts and get them on board.
