The fact that some people are even coming down on this guy for helping his son afford to get an education just proves that some people here don't actually have one.
The school I went to is a private school and is extremely expensive. Upwards of $90,000. Now that is not the national average but still even $50-$60k for school is NOT cheap by any means.
With jobs being more difficult to find, especially in some areas, and the cost of education getting more expensive every year, some of the responses make me wonder how sober the people posting are.

I never went to college...attended the School of Hard Knocks instead...Having said that, I'll put my success up next to damn near anyones....Education without a strong work ethic is a waste...
Personally, I think it depends on the individual....a story in a recent newspaper article featured a woman who was absolutely LIVID that she spent $300K on her sons education and his plan for the next few years was to hop freight trains until he decided what he wanted to do with his life
and nothing against the OP...but the time to start preparing for your kid's college is LONG before it gets to the point of selling a $20K car...JMO
I've got one kid in college and another on the way next year. Student loans? Yes, but that's their problem after they graduate. I say, "grow up kid, you want to be an adult, then act like it." In previous generations, parents rarely paid for their kids' education.

I've known a few people to do this also. As you stated it ALL depends on the individual and that person's circumstances and resources. You've made a great career as an officer and many people can't do that, for simple fear of the job or whatever reason. There are also people that join the military to help pay for school if they choose to do so. Again not an option for everyone. I'm just sad that people want to talk trash about a dad helping his son. What a terrible parent.
