I have owned a Mustang Mach 1 and this one Vette. I have to say that the Mustang was not a good example of all the best technology that Ford had to offer. I had issues with almost every system on the car. The 98 Vert that I own is an amazing car. Even though it is 14 years old it is very sophisticated from a technology standpoint.
I also have to believe that a car with a backseat and high horsepower is at odds with itself!! The backseat screams family "truckster" while the Vette always whispers " drive me baby, I won't let you down" Just my $.02.

I also have had vettes for a long time , but my 80 vette is a beauty but I would trade it for a 2008-12 mustang vert GT . And of course keep the 04 vert, I like the newer ones, V-6 or V-8

I guess being older (69) I see this differently. In 1964 Ford offered the public a new vehicle, the PONY car. That first Mustang came with an inline 6 or small (260) V8. As the years went by it grew to a point that people no longer thought of it as a pony car. Then for some unknown reason, Ford decided to make it really small again (MustangII). Eventually, Ford put the Mustang on the Fox chassis and began to make it a fun and performance car again. Today the Mustang is a very competent performance car. Now, during all that time (1964-2012) the Corvette maintained its basic premise, a two seat sports car. The original competition from Ford was the Thunderbird but after three models it became a luxury car. I have lusted after both over all these years but when I finally had the opportunity I bought a Corvette. They should not be compared as equals because they were never intended to be so. Each has a purpose and they fill that purpose very well.

I consider myself a big Corvette guy. I love these cars. I love working on them, motors are easy to tear into compared to mod motors. The potential is huge, and they are thrilling in many ways. I own a '99 C5 FRC with a pretty aggressive H/C/I/E setup + suspension and some drivetrain upgrades. This car is a blast.

With that being said - I also own a '99 SVT Cobra - completely built, forged block, ported 4V cylinder heads, aggressive blower cams, running a Paxton Novi 2000 (8-Rib Conversion) pushing 20 lbs of boost. Built suspension, drivetrain, and rear end. This Cobra is a beast (703 whp 567 wtq):

NOW with that being said - the Corvette is in a class of it's own. While my Cobra will definitely lay it down on my Vette in a straight line. When it comes to overall performance, the Vette is a true "drivers" car. It is light, handles amazing, and lays the power down nicely. And it looks amazing while doing it. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't hardcore into Stangs, but I won't deny that the Corvette comes out the top dog - no matter how you look at it. They are in different classes. If we are taking about Muscle/Pony Cars then yes, I am an avid Stang supporter. But the Vette doesn't fall into that class, it is a well built Sports Car. I will always be a Mustang guy but I will always have the Vette in my heart .

I eventually want to get a mustang as well. First car was a ford SVT contour and I loved that thing. But cars of all kinds are interesting!

I can tell that this thread will probably turn out to be pretty long, but thats what forums are all about right? Personally, like most others here have said, these are two completely different cars, sporty vs sports cars. As the owner of an 01 ZO6, i am always amazed when i open up a current auto mag,Motor Trend,Car and Driver, etc., its fasinating to see the performance times of the newer Stangs that now are creeping up into C5ZO6 territory considering the Z is now ten years old,and the 4.0 to 60 stock performance times. I will admit that the Mustang is a much better car now than when i owned my 87 GT, which by the way was the worst car Ive ever owned from a quality standpoint. As for the Mustang being an affordable everymans car, I think those days are going away pretty quickly when you can pile on options on a GT to the low $40K range,GT500,mid $50K+, Super Snake $80K+,and the recently introduced Shelby 1000,149K,excluding the price of the GT. But even the Shelby after everything is said and done,is still a Mustang. And for the price of the Shelby, I would instead get a new ZR1,and have change leftover for some serious mods. Resale, Corvettes have always had better resale value than Mustangs,ANY Mustang. On the straights, depending on the model Mustang, stock to stock, it may be competitivein the straights, in the twisties, aint happening. As far as having one to drive on occasion,my personal choice would be a Camaro ZL1.

I'll always have a passion for Corvettes - that's just the way I am. I agree comparing a Mustang and a Corvette is comparing cars with two different purposes, but I've had both and liked both very much. I wouldn't mind some day having a newer Mustang in my garage, especially something like a GT500 or a Shelby Cobra. They are great looking cars.

Ford created this discusssion. They could either go for performance or affordability. They went with both and lost the appeal of the Mustang to performance guys, UNLESS you are a Mustang lover to begin with.

And they aren't going to steal many, if any, Corvette/Camaro etc guys away because of it.

I'm one of those who looked hard at a Mustang before my first vette, but I'm sorry, I'm not driving a car that everyone else has. As someone else pointed out to me a couple weeks ago, 'Grandma ain't driving a GT" Well maybe she isn't but unless your a car guy/gal or a Mustang lover, people don't know the difference.

In years past I was a Mustang fan but the Mustang II ruined it for me. The Berlinetta ruined the Camaro for me. Glad to see them come back but they need to remake that bland interior.

I actually feel bad for the GT/Cobra guys, who would want so many versions of such a nice car? Not me.

But I've had several very rare cars in my life. Not real barn burners but very rare. 73 Chevelle 454, 75 Roadrunner, 68 Chev Short bed 4x4, with factory air even my 84 Monte Carlo SS is fairly rare.

Today I drive a FRC. I don't have to be the fastest, but I like being unique.

If you have a Mustang, fine, I won't talk bad about them, I'm sure they are a fine fun car to have. I really like that light colored Blue. (don't know what color they call it actually) Some of them would blow me away I know. But I don't care. There are also things about our vettes I find troubling, and that's the build quality. But it is what it is. At least they're affordable in the used market. But there are a couple Mustangs I would consider swapping for my vette. 302 Boss comes to mind

I was and still am a mustang fan. I had a Saleen Sc number 21 of 21 made in 93. I got the car in 99 when I was 21. When I use to go to car shows the corvette owners would always speak down to the mustang owners... I think over time people who purchased mustangs got them to be corvette killers... I agree they are to different types pf cars... I just think some owners of the corvettes bring it on themselves. Due to the way they act. Some of us always think were better because of what we have, and do to this we are always targets (IMO)

I find this a very interesting post.

I'm currently thinking about selling my current car (a Factory Five Racing Cobra replica) and buying something a little more practical. (Either a C4/C5 Corvette or a '99-'04 Mustang (Cobra, Bullitt, GT or Mach I.)) Any car that I purchase will have a manual transmission and will NOT be a convertible.

I really like the looks of the New Edge Mustangs when they're appropriately modified (lowered suspension, tires and wheels, etc.). Plus their handling and engine performance can be easily improved with the aftermarket. (And I know that a Mustang's suspension/handling will probably never be able to equal or surpass a Corvette's.)

However, I like the out-of-the-box performance of the Corvette. But one thing that concerns me about the Vette is the common theme of electrical issues as well as GM's reputation for build quality. (The Mustang has a lot fewer - and unnecessary in my opinion - gizmos.)

Plus, even though I currently drive an '02 Tahoe, I've pretty much been a Ford performance guy for the past 27+ years. ('85 Mustang GT, Vortech supercharged '94 Mustang Cobra and my current FFR that I bought as a kit in 2000.)

There's pro and cons for each (C4/C5 vs. '99-'04 Mustang). If/when I sell my FFR I guess I'll need to drive a few of each and see which is the one for me...

I love my C5. I have owned 1 Mustang when I was young. It was a 1969 428 SCJ drag pack car. Sure wish I still had it!

Mustang = pony car

Big difference. Both are great and do what they do very well.

Muscle cars are big block intermediate size cars e.g. Chevelle, Fairlane, Dart etc.
There are no muscle cars currently built today..

it is a 68. Both the 72 vette and 68 mustang have a completely rebuilt engine, tranny, suspension, braking and steering system. tough restoring two classics and it has taken a while. now they just need paint and new chrome.

Tell that to Ford, Dodge, and Chevy.......They still make muscle cars. They are heavy with V8's that are meant to go fast down a straight line. Old school vs. new school muscle cars is different topic.
