I place myself in the category of Corvette guys that neither hates Mustangs nor particularly loves them. I admire them but...
Anyway, I read this thread on a message board and thought it summed up my feelings pretty well...
Matthew G. - I'm a proud owner of a '11 Mustang GT, and am impressed with the vehicles performance. I know the next generation is just around the corner, so why not make the high end Mustang the Corvette killer. After all, this was Ford's answer to Chevrolet in the 60's. Also, many editorials have compared the GT500's to vettes and GTRs. Let's do it Ford!! I have faith.
James M. - wont happen. mustang will never be a vette killer. out run it? maybe but it wont ever outclass it. u can pack more horses under the hood and it wont do any good. mustangs are a true "me to" car. ive sent specs and concepts to fords r&d dept on a new flagship that would compete with high end luxury and sports cars alike. ecoboost v10 awd in a modern retro coupe based of a mid 1930s ford. elegant and powerful

I agree with "won't happen". Corvette is supposed to be the flagship and crown jewel achievement of the Chevrolet line. Some think it's not treatd that way but I feel it still is.
The mustang is ford's sports car but still just another vehicle in the fomoco family. I think they would look to a King Ranch F250 or something like that as their crown jewel.
I think Chevy will always put more r&d into Corvettes than Ford will ever put into Mustangs. Ford continues their history of keeping a new stang in the "everyman" price range while Chevy sells the Corvette at prices that..well...I have always had to buy used. Compared to eauro sports cars, vettes are still the best bang for buck sports cars but they are the "expensive" American icon.
Mustangs are also dime-a-dozen because you have base v6 models that are pretty good deals considering what they are but you see them everywhere. Comparing a LS1 A4 vette to a "base model" stang is like comparing a cub cadet lawn tractor to a sling blade.
I'm not a mustang basher at all. If I found a '99 35th anniversary package gt for cheap I'd buy it. I've always liked them. I'd drive a newer gen gt if I could pick one up cheap to drive in the rain, sleet and snow because I just feel dirty driving the vette in the rain.
Both of these vehicles are american classics (add the camaro too) but the difference is that...
Number 1: The vette has ALWAYS looked great and classy... the mustang not so much.
Number 2: Everybody owns a mustang, they're around every corner... the vette?
Only the priviledged few!
well thats because a new vette is twice the cost of a new mustang. the mustang and camaro were more in competition with each other. the vette was built to compete with the import sports cars. of course time and depreciation have allowed us mere mortals to be able to afford a C5 but if I had to buy a brand new car today. i could afford a new GT a lot easier than even a base C6.
As a guy that grew up with a major obsession with cars in general and a big place in my heart for Mustangs, I agree with some of this. Mustangs are not a "niche" vehicle like Corvettes are, BUT they are NOT an "Everyman" car anymore. I looked long and hard at getting another pony to play with, but for under $20k choices are limited. A new loaded GT is over $40k. That's not exactly cheap guys. Whereas I bought an '01 Z06 for under $18k. No, it's not new, but it'll smoke a new GT in every category exact cargo capacity. And it's not that hard to work on. Have you worked on a Supercharged '03 Cobra? It's a nightmare. Lol. I will always be a Mustang guy, but I'm a car guy first.

lol whats so bad about an 03/04 cobra? I used to own one prior to the vette and the only thing that stang had on the c5 was ZERO electronic issues! People who have owned both might appreciate gm performance more like I do
Yup, my stang is only better than the corvette I own in the department of reliability, suspension, bhp, fuel economy, interior quality, paint job, resale value, insurance cost, braking, and it gets a LOT more comments than my corvette.
Now don't go throwing your toys everywhere and start spitting tobacco on my feet. They are different cars, and I love them both.
I also have a couple of other cars, and oddly enough I didn't see it written down that I was changing my religion when I bought those too.
14 made like mine - ever. Get a grip of your ego fella.
What???
Old 4 cyl. and v6 stangs are a dime a dozen. It's a figure of speech. There are tons on the road and they are easily affordable cars. Nothing in my post is stang bashing at all! One of my first cars was a used highway patrol mustang. It was butt beige but a great car for a teenager. I grew up riding in my dad's '69 coupe. I will eventualy find a '99 35th anniversary car with the silver guages and carbon fiber rear insert.
I'm sure you are proud of your car. I'd like to see it and be given a chance to compliment you on owning a rare gem before you accuse me of egotism. Having pride in owning any low numbers car is a great feeling. I have an old jag xj6 coupe that is rare and it gets lots of attention at euro car shows.
The "dime a dozen" statement applies to '88 mustang lx 4 bangers you can pick up at buy here pay here lots for under a grand, not rare cars like yours.
I should have never commented on this thread. I see mustangs at the drag strip eat everything else there on a regular basis. Comparing corvettes and mustangs is like trying to add collision to a life insurance policy.

My mistake, I thought you were bashing.
Sorry about that, I feel bad now.
Jags are lovely. They always seem to make better versions of the Aston Martins.
We're good. I don't blame you for defending your car and I owe a retraction to TheReaper as well. I was just looking at new GT prices and I would agree that they are not "everyman" cars anymore.
I would venture to say that back in the mid '60's the only "everyman" mustang was a 3 speed straight 6 200 coupe with no a/c. The optioned out pony cars were not really inexpensive.
Thank God for camaros and firebirds or somebody would have already been killed in a bar fight over the mustang/corvette debate.
If I were to get a new car I would look @ the Laguna Seca Stang I have friend that has one he also owns a 2011 ZR1 both cars serve diff. Purposes and let me say his L.S. Stang is bitchen it's fast it handles well and is fun do drive his ZR1 is wicked I thought my. Vette was quick but has nothing on his ZR1 and the L.S. Stang is a beast so hey the way I see it is we all have a love affair for cars.
I've always liked all performance cars. I don't care if it's a Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge, Subaru, Mitsubishi, etc. I had a Mustang Cobra before I bought the Vette and loved it. As others have said, the Mustang is more of a muscle car and the Corvette is a sports car. I really don't care what kind of car someone drives, as long as they share my love and passion for cars. What you find on this forum are a lot of Corvette guys (obviously) and not as many car guys. If I didn't have my Vette, I'd have a Mustang. Any day around cars is a good day for me, regardless of their make.
