The Corvette is a sports car. The message from chevy has never changed. I bet there are many people that have owned 20 or more vettes.
Ford constantly changes or goes back to the drawing board. They sometimes succeed in competing with the vette, but often times, they have come up short. Therefore their clients are often left without an option when they want a new performance car.
Vette vs T-Bird -> winner = vette
Vette vs cobra -> winner = cobra
Vette vs mustang -> winner = vette
Vette vs Shelby mustang -> push
Vette vs Ford GT IV -> winner ford GT IV
Vette vs mustang II -> winner vette
Vette vs 1980's & 1990's Ford products - winner-> vette
Vette ZR1 vs GT500KR Super Snake - winner-> vette
I am glad to see that we've been having civilized discussions since late last night when I realized I was kind of being a d**chebag by posting from nostalgia and not posting based on fact. This thread has encouraged me to go find that '99 35th anniversay stang I've been wanting since....uh...1999. If it can sit with the vettes and jags and they can all get along, I'll park the mercedes with them and start a United Nations meeting in my driveway.
The problem is if I come up with enough cash to buy that stang, I will find myself browsing for a C4 or an xjs with a 350 conversion because vettes and jags are my personal preferences. Nothing against ford. Hell, I have 2 jags now that are fords in disguise. One built while ford owned jaguar and the other with a 302 under the hood.
I agree with most on here that "car" guys like and respect all other "car" guys regardless of their personal choices. I kinda draw the line with asian imports because they are just not my thing. I have an employee in his early 20's that is a ricer nut. His face lights up talking about nsx's and skylines and I recognize that look so I don't berate anything he says. I enjoy the conversation. Some of those cars are damn fast they are just not my preference.
I might call an asian import a "ricer" from time to time but I never call mustangs "rustangs" or any other names like that. All these cars we love are American Icons and the older ones are examples of our work ethic and craftsmanship in this country.
I am definately a vette guy but certain mustangs just turn my crank especially the early Shelby's but looks like the next gen will not be a performance car anylonger with a new 'eco' drivetrain in it.... to me the mustang does not compete nor should it be compared in the vette segment...but rather to camaros, challengers and the like.
Ford did somehow manage to keep the basic traditional design for over 40 years and it never lost that look....you always recognize a mustang when you see it...few cars have that except for the vette and a few others.
People that are blind to any other brand are only hurting themselves.
There's a boatload of very fine vehicles our there, and hating one just because it's a Ford, Porsche, or whatever is in my opinion ignorance.
My Cobra replica will kick my Corvettes ***, and probably the majority of other Corvettes also. However I enjoy them both and in my opinion one is no better than the other. They are just different.
But then I could take my Cobra to an autocross event and have my *** handed to me by a Miata. Does that make his Miata better than my Cobra? No, just better at a particular function.
oh yeah...same boat here...is that a '67 or '68 in there?
i have a '68 that i need to show some more love
i still run with the Mustang club i used to be president of and serve as a "peacemaker"...we also have a late model camaro running with us...turning more into an American Muscle clique than Stang Club
the Vette guys here just don't really hang out like other car owners...they are usually in bed by hang out time and up by 4am...lol
Its funny you say that... I wanted my corvette before I got old. Everyone said wait a few years and youll be able to afford one. Years went by and all I heard from family and friends is wait a few years! Well I got tired of waiting and bought a 2003 vert. The kicker is I have to be in bed by 8 and up by 4am to drive my *** to work so I can afford the car Ill be 25 this year. New ones are totally out of my price range but I am glad to be able to own the one I have
I too enjoy all types of cars, the NSX being one of my favorite imports. I dont know whats happening with the new ones though.

I love my Vette, and I will grab one of the newer mustangs in the future as well.
And I lay the blame on some guy who I see on my commute regularly, who drives a 427R Mustang and the sound coming out of that thing is really nice!
(Darn him!!)
Now I gotta add to stable!

also, "get a Vette before you get old"...SAME HERE...and i don't like when folks say its a mid-life crisis purchase...nope, its just that it happened that i was able to afford one at this point in my life...in college i built up stupid credit card bills and tuition...but now, i'm 12 years deep in my profession and my money is right...Lord knows, if i had one before, when i was younger and dumb, i might not have been mature enuf to respect it!
but i love cars and American muscle more than anything!
I've had 2 mustangs and 5 corvettes. Mustangs compete with camaro. Corvette is a two seater sports car. It competes with ford gt etc.. more exotic vehicles. You can make a mustang very fast. Mustangs dont handle like corvettes either. I have a supercharged c5 corvette that makes 600hp at the crank but I had a mustang that made 1200 hp at the crank. My stang ran 8.60 in quartermile but it couldnt handle. It was set up for drag racing of course but even my buddies mustang road racers still could not hang with a vette. the vette is much more refined and nimble with good power. anything above 600 hp you cant use on the street. I like them both but I came back to Corvette because I missed the handling and the people. mustang owners are usually young guys and they have there scene. Corvette owners tend to be older more established men who require a finer car and not so brutish. Love them both. Love Corvette more.
As most mentioned, the two are completely different cars. On that note, the only mustangs I would ever own (I just recently sold my 04 Cobra with a 2.8liter kenne bell blower, etc) is either another SVT Terminator Cobra (03-04 models) or the GT500s. The mach1s, GT's and other models just don't do it for me.
After owning both, as I said, I like both in their own way. I love the sound of a 03-04 supercharged 4 valve, just like I do my cammed ls3 c5. C5 has a very sport car feel, you drive it and it just glides through the road without breaking a sweat (especially at high speeds its very stable), my 04 cobra I had definitely was a beast but it didn't ride as smoothly as the vette. After 100+mph the cobra felt like hell (car unstable etc, well maybe thats because of my 335 hoosier slicks but still).
I just don't get people who say "Ford blows I won't ever drive one etc", you can't be an ignorant person IMO. I personally love all types of cars I could care less if it was a ford or chevy etc.

I agree totally. And might I add, u have mighty fine taste in color sir
My Chevy and Ford
I agree with most guys here. Im more of Corvette guy than just a Chevy guy though I prefer it over the other big 2. Still Im an overall car guy and respect any impressive machine with four wheels. Still this is an apples to oranges comparison. The Mustang was never made to compete with the vette and it never has. Even then only a few modern mustangs have had a bit faster straightline acceleration and only up to a point. The Corvette has always been the American answer to small nimble European sports cars. This thread would make more sense if it were Camaro vs Mustang. The Corvette has always been in a league of its own. Only the Viper has been a real competitor but when you compare price vs performance the Vette comes out on top.
Just like many have said, a Corvette & a Mustang are quite different cars. I like cars in general (like most folks have stated)!!!! My vette is the BEST car I own, but I love the others as well (they each have their own "personality"). Here is my current line up (Yes I have a mustang & have owned 5 total):
My vette
My 1990 Camaro
My 1990 Mustang
My 2008 Mustang
I have purchased a 2011 GT that I think is a beast! Yes I love my corvette but the 5.0 runs like a horse. My vette top down is a cruzing dream and the best car I've ever owned. My 5.0 is a screaming street racer that young and old can afford and enjoy.
There are car guys in every group and they are all welcome to their opinions. Having the best of both worlds and options everyday is a wonderful thing!
