The C6 is obviously and advancement over the C5 but for me it's about aesthetics. I think the C5 has a lower slung more classic look than the C6. I'd need to see a C7 up close and in person before I could really decide that one.
The C7 looks amazing until you get to the rear and think its a Camaro.
I agree with the C6 being more advanced but the thing that's so great about a C5; you can make it beyond a C6 for less and still look awesome!
The C6 was always an "evolutionary" design rather than a revolutionary design. As was said it was an attempt to "clean up" the C5 (as if it needed it.) The C5Z design will stay as popular as the 63Z split window. After all these years, who wouldn't want a 63Z? That can't be said for the standard C6.

Extremely well said. The C5 is timeless. Again, I liken it to the MKIV Supra, FD RX7, BNR34 Skyline, etc. Those cars still fetch tons of cash and still get looks. Even though Corvettes are a dime a dozen, you will still get looks or a thumbs up. The C6 is a beautiful car but its not something you will see in a collectors garage. The C5 on the other hand...

As you said, The C5 is a dime a dozen... I don't believe the C5 in my life time will ever hit Collector status.

They already have though that's my point. I know a few collectors and staples in their collections are C5's and Supra TT's. Those are cars that may be a dime a dozen, but still are highly sought after and getting older and older everyday. It took me a long time to find a C5 in the condition mine was in. Mine was almost brand spanking new looking. Paid a pretty penny too.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head with the c6 being evolutionary rather than revolutionary.
I see base c6s falling below C5s in the long run. It doesnt have that appeal the C5 has. ESPECIALLY since they have like 4 models of the c6 that blow the base c6 out of the water in the looks department.
Nothing like a C5Z to put things into perspective. No matter how many times I drive a C6BASE, I still prefer the rawness of my C5Z!!
a drive in a Brand new C6 base sent me right into the seat of my C5z. As for "improved controls" I couldn't care less. I'm way too busy enjoying the DRIVE.
I absolutely hate the base c6. Something looks so off about it. It looks like a failed attempt at a body kitted c5. The rear end looks cheap and unfinished,
to be honest that I think is one of the best features of the c6.I do like the placement of the reverse lights on the c6 better than the c5 and I like the curves near the plate and the tail lights on the c6 as well. The other thing I do like about the c6 is the stereo is a double din already and (OK I know it is superficial) I like the corvette logo on the screen of the stereo on the c6. Those however are no where enough to make me get rid of my c5!
I had a 2005 C6 for five years - - added the Billy Boat exhaust and a dozen or so trim features . . .wonderful car, very quick, fun to drive.
I've been fortunate enough to have each of the Corvette generations except the C5 . . got alittle bored with the C6, sold it and got this C5. I got a good deal on buying the car and thought I'd improve upon it, tweak a few things mechanically and cosmetically, then peddle it.
Now, after six months of ownership, the "newness" hasn't worn off yet and I'm really enjoying the car. In many/most ways- it feels like my C6-- power, handling (now with Bilsteins and sways)...might actually have more interior room. Wish I had the C6 dash and stereo/climate controls.
Point is- I don't miss my C6 at all and will hope to drive this until C7s are on the street.
Oftentimes, we want what we don't have. If you're longing for a C6- by all means get one. But when the newness wears a bit, I suspect you'll wonder what the big deal is all about . .
Just my .02-PRecision Red C6 and my Blue Deuce . . .
Exactly what I have been saying for a long time . Before the C7 was introduced the C6 was the newest vette so many thought they would " move up " and now that it is not the newest kid on the block , they are seeing it for what it is and going back to the C5. Side by side there is no comparison. The C6 is just another car and is falling rapidly into the background. The same will happen to the C7 , just a matter of time for it too. Just telling it the way I see it !
I am looking to upgrade from my '92 C4 - which is in great shape and I should just keep it (don't have room for more than one vette).
I drove a really nice condition base C6 coupe tonight and a not as nice C5 coupe a couple days ago...now I'm off to look at a couple nicer C5's
I am going to quit looking at C6's and focus on C5's - while I like the paddle shift auto of the C6 by any other measure of what I care about the C5 wins - it's just a better looking car in my book. A LeMans edition would be the dream - but I have a nice low milage black on black 6 speed in focus now that fits the budget. There is also a very sweet blue auto that could rise to the top. Only coupes for me.
When the time comes I will by the latest year model C6 I can afford. Hoping for a Zo6 C6. Hopefully torch red. The wife says as long as it's not yellow. It will be her daily driver.
Blasphemy...?? I prefer C5 slammed, flared, timeless classic. smooooooth..never mind what I think of the 6&7 (I'm talkin' strictly visuals here, mind ya)
I guess I am lucky as I don't have to make that choice, as I own both a C5 and a C6.
As I read this whole thread at one time I cannot help but notice a lot of guys are not only Very Proud of there C5's but are also listing pretty silly reasons why they would keep the one and not the other. It is like they are trying to convince themselves.
I actually bought the C6 before I bought the C5 and I am still not quite sure how I bought that C6 in the first place. I was actually going to buy a 32 Ford Roadster.
It was an interesting day. I had bought a 63 Split Window Coupe three months before that day. It was one of those lucky find type cars. I was in Farmersville, Tx and had stopped for gas. It was one of those older type Stations with the wash bay and the lift bay. Setting in the wash bay was this 63 coupe. Got to talking to the guy that owned the station and he said he had got it through a trade on some guns. I asked him if it ran and drove, he said yea it did. We fired it up and that old 327 ran OK but smoked like a stove pipe. Interior was junk as was the paint and tires and wheels. I asked him if he would sell it he said sure "But It Ain't Going T be Cheap" I said OK how much? He says $25,000 I said SOLD. I thought he was going to faint. Went to the local Bank and did a wire transfer and took him a cashiers check for the 25 Grand. I then had to go and buy a trailer and it was on its way home that same day.
I took that poor old beat up Vette to a guy a knew in San Jose who had been restoring Corvettes for 20 years, and asked him if he would restore it for me. He said he would and I got it back two months later and $64,500 dollars lighter. I went up for sale the next day and 4 days later was sold to a guy in Florida for a nice profit. I would have kept that car but I am a big man and I just couldn't get comfortable in it.
I then went to buy this really nice (according to the ad) 32 Ford Roadster. Well that was a waste of time as it was just plan junk. So while I am at this consignment lot I noticed a Viper setting there. I had never ever even sat in one of those so I gave it a try. Well those damn Vipers may look big on the outside but they are damn small on the inside, so that was a no go for sure and for certain.
As I am driving home I am going down El Camino Real and was passing one of the biggest Corvette dealers in Ca, Courtesy Chevrolet. and I ask myself " Self I wonder if you can get into one of those new Vettes?" I pull in and man did they have the Corvettes must have been at least 50 of them on that lot. Salesman comes up and I explain I AM NOT A BUYER! I just want to see if I can get my big butte in one of those things. We go over to this really nice Black Coupe and in I get, No Problem at all. I even have plenty of leg room ( I am 6'4" and weigh ---well too much) Salesman "lets go for a ride". I once again explain to him I am not in the market. He didn't care and said man I need a little break anyway. So we pull out and head down the road, very cool little car no doubt about it, but I wasn't in the Market--Right?
An hour later I am driving that 2006 C6 home and the Salesmen is following me in my wifes Chrysler. Got an unbelievable deal, and I still believe that to this day, and I have enjoyed that little car to no end. Glad I wasn't in the market.
C5 I just bought on a whim. I shoot and compete in Long Range Shooting Competitions. I am at a shoot and I fellow shooter is telling me about his son who has just bought a C5 Coupe as he is looking at my C6. Says his son is going to sell it because he is scared to death of the thing. Turns out the guy is a little bit of a drinker and got drunk and got nailed for a DUI, 6 days after he bought this C5. His wife had told him either the car goes or she does. Well the boy must have loved the girl because I bought the car the next day.
So I have both and I can tell you this. Both are base models, both are Black the C6 is better equipped than the C5, both are 6 speeds. There are things I like about both, the C6 is a little roomier for a big guy like myself especially in the hip area. Both have more than enough leg room for a big man. The C6 does have the HUD and I like that a lot but it sure wouldn't be a deal killer for me. The C6 is "MUCH" easier to get out of than the C5. But in the end the only real difference to me is the look. The money shot for either one is the going away shot from the rear. They both are plenty fast enough for me "PERSONALLY". I mean they both are just Hot Rods, and I drive mostly around on these country roads we have here in Alabama, and pretend I am AJ Foyt at Le Mans. That keeps my blood to pumping.
I like them both but for some reason that I don't completely understand when I get ready to go for a ride I have to force myself a little to take the C6 instead of the C5.
I too dont have to make these decisions, as I own a C4, C5 and a C6. And I drive the C5 and C6 just about equally. What I have noticed is that driving all three is it feels very different when driving each one, be it handling, comfort, performance. The C6 feels more like a luxury Vette when I sit in the cockpit, When I sit in the C5, it feels more like a racing vette.
Designer Imagines A Corvette That Looks More Like a Corvette Than the Corvette
