sfc rick, I fully understand the desire to own a Rolex. I priced out several and was ready to pull the trigger on a Day/Date a few years ago. Talked it over with the wife and she was totally against the Rolex. BUT that conversation sure helped when I told her a few months later I wanted to get back into Corvettes. So I guess you can say my Rolex is parked in the garage . As far as watches go, I'll have to settle for the 60's Longines Ultrachron with OEM wristband and a Seiko divers watch I've picked up over the years.
Picked up the Seiko at a church rummage sale for a whole $1.

AS many will attest, especially first time corvette owners.. the common adage is that everyone should own a corvette at some point in their life.. just to experience the feeling of ownership in an exclusive club.... same goes with a Rolex, or a Baum and Mercier, or a Cartier.. these watches are not bought for their time keeping capabilities as much as they are bought for the experience in ownership, and the personal feeling of accomplishment. Its not about snobbery, but for some it is... But then I say, is owning a corvette about snobbery, or self satisfaction? Reaching a certain level of success in life, that reminds us that we work had for our money, and on occasion deserve to buy something for our self... for many its after the kids get out of college, the girls weddings are paid for.... the house has no mortgage, etc. It just a marker in your life's experience.. A level of completion, that you have set for yourself... everyone should have short range goals and long range goals.. for many a Corvette and a Rolex are long range goals... but they are goals to shoot for.... For others it might be that Cessna, or that G5 Gulfstream, for others it may be their first car... or maybe their first New car... we all have goals,,,, that's a good thing..
The End

I have enjoyed this thread. Was waiting for it to move past watches and timepieces. I guess I will see if I can do that..........
Do you know that some people collect pens?
I have a fairly nice Waterman - I guess you could call it my "daily-signer". Anyway, it was given to me by a former employer on the occasion of the closing of a watershed transaction. ("Watershed" means "monumental" - not "outhouse" ).
Anyway, I use it mostly for signing documents, instead of taking notes.
Will add a picture later.
Anyway, there are many collectible pens out there and they can be absolute works of art. Some are as much fun to admire as a nice C5, (well, almost as much fun).

Servicing our Rolexes about every 7 years costs about $800+ for each but they come back like new, inside and out. If a Rolex is not professionally serviced at least every 10 years, 5 if used heavily, they will start to break down internally.

I bought my first SS Submariner in Hong Kong China Fleet Club in 1970. It's appreciated about 400%. My two tone blue face Submariner was bought when we got married in 2000. We paid about $6,000 and they now go for $11,000ish new and I've been offered $8500 for ours. My Breitling SS B1 and my wife's two tone Breitling also hold their value or appreciate nicely. Great watches.

My newest everyday watch is a Tissot T-Touch Expert Solar SS band. Amazing tough watch at a real bargain price with tremendous modern features. Solar, compass, altimeter, barometer, multiple time zones, alarms, etc. $1200 and worth every penny.

I agree that wearing an expensive watch in a bad area is just asking for trouble, maybe fatal trouble. Use good judgment. Bad karma to get shot for wearing a $100 Rolex knockoff.

People get killed for 5 dollars... I wear my Rolex everywhere... I don't have bars on my windows and doors.. I carry 10 to 15 K worth of camera equipment into the woods alone....I've spent 200 days a year in the woods doing wild life photography... its a perfect place to be a victim.. no one around.. a million places to exit. etc.. I have no fear of the potential of an altercation..IM not going to hide behind closed doors... I practice awareness training daily...the woods is a quiet place... if anyone is there to take what I have.. I will hear them coming ... I may lose in an altercation, but I have a good chance of coming out on top..

I've had people of questionable character come across me in the woods, I was prepared for them by their sound, way before I saw them.. I Gave them eye contact and a sense of presence that a victim would never show... IN these half dozen encounters there was never an issue.. Don't know if it was my body language, or these questionable people were just nature lovers, who looked hard core.
I also wear my Rolex into the woods..
And IM still here'

Sounds like you have a fun life. Can't really say that I consider the wilderness to necessarily be a bad area. Now, areas where even the cops only travel in twos or threes and even nice restaurants have window bar systems, those are what I might consider to be a bad area.

I go into the city all the time... hundreds of cops around... lots of killings and muggings occur in the city of Brotherly love... the 6 o'clock news is filled with crime.. My wild life preserve is 1200 acres of wetland and woodland, which boarders this city.. and the Airport, which is out in the boonies.. there is probably 10,000 acres here, between the actual preserve and the airport property.

This is the horror I have to put up with when I go to this preserve...

owning a corvette is pretty much the same as owning a rolex really, no one need a corvette its not a practical car its not know for MPG, its space or passengers comforts so how is owning a corvette exceptable but a rolex is for snobby showoff's?

some of us just like nice things, not to show off or prove any thing to anyone. i wear one of mine and I feel just as good wearing it as I do driving my z06

I know right... Just wearing it makes a statement, and if you don't think others notice what you have.... well that's life.

I seriously don't mean this to be offensive, but driving a Z06 is exhilarating, a watch just sits on your wrist. But hey, if you like it, cool.
That said, I personally wish the moderators would either create a "water cooler" forum so posts about things like watches don't end up here, or move/delete said posts. Nothing at all to do with cars. Yes, I know, don't read it, but it's there in our face for no reason at all... if there were a forum for non-car related things we wouldn't have to sift thru it every time we visit.
Enjoy your watch.
As for the age thing noted by another; I'm 51 and use my cell phone for the time.

There is an OFF topic forum section... don't know if this on qualifies for it or not? The picture of the said watch was on a C5 shift ****?

The reason I noted age is because most if not all my kids (44 and 38) and grandkids do not wear watches and use only their phones. I also go to a large casino in AC and noticed that very few younger people wear watches. If your phone works for you that's fine but will stick to my comment, just look at I this way you're young at heart....

i'm just wasting time here on the forum so stuff like this dont bother me to much. The site sponsors taking up a hole page now that gets me lol

Sorry, but that comment sounds totally ignorant. The Rolex market is currently being flooded by up scale younger successful generations who think relying on the latest phone is dumb, since they come and go with each monthly billing cycle. Maybe you run with the wrong crowd? Step up with some ambition in your life.

I think you have every right to bitch about having to view threads about watches and other things in a Corvette forum. you have two options..
1) when you see a thread that says Corvette and Rolex and do not feel there is any relationship between Rolex and C5.. a smart man would stay out of the thread about Rolex.

2) the second option would be to, hit the complaint button for everything you do not like, because the thread will evolve on its own... IM not being sarcastic, or cynical.. you have these rights... that's why this is such a good forum.

The problem that some of us have, is that over the years we have become a family that sometimes transcends our Cars... and we might throw in some other stuff... much appreciated by many.. but then many don't approve...its not my forum... you can do and say what every you want within reason, and your point is well placed. WE only want to see Corvette stuff...

Not to mention the Rolex is an investment where as the smart watch is just the flavor of the month. Buy a Rolex, especially used, and you'll probably get your money back and then some if you hang onto it for awhile before selling. Buy a smart phone and it's worthless as soon as the next generation version hits the shelves. It's much cheaper to own the Rolex over time.

Fully understood. Other sites I attend have special forums for off topic discussion, moderators will often move or delete, just feel that should be here as well. As I also noted I can ignore it, but it said Corvette and Rolex. As I read most posts, I assumed it had something to do with a Corvette.
