Well, as promised I'm reporting back. Bad news is original switch was fine. Installed new AC Delco switch and noted same situation. Just too much work to try to root this any further. Getting ready to install resistor. Provided the resistor works reliably long term, hopefully this is the best solution. I did a quick test with a 1 ohm 1 watt resistor and the test worked fine. Now going to solder it inline and shield.
