I'm sure that number is lower now as texting is much bigger in 2016, but it's a very good point, lots of people think what they do is ok because they do it and get away with it. Lots of distractions out there and in the car.

As to adjusting the AC/heater or radio, that's a very momentary action, not a sustained action diverting use of one or both hands. You should know that, Murray. I shouldn't have to tell you that.
Okay. Admit that this is your opinion, not a fact.Because you believe something doesn't make it any more true.I don't do it in the Vette because of ketchup/ mustard stains (and fries under the seat)

I'll end my part here because there is only one person on this earth I would allow to talk to me the way you finished your last post, and you're not him.

Oh, it's not just my opinion, Murray, it IS a fact. Maybe you didn't see Paul's (akapounder's) link above. Go back and read it and then tell me again it's just my opinion and not a fact.

I feel anything other than driving is a distraction, my wife would say look at that house and I would do a quick look and go back to the road and she would get mad and say you didn't ever look. I am driving sweetie !!!

Sorry but I take this subject VERY seriously. Years ago, three members of my wife's family were killed when a DWI driver ran a stop sign and t-boned the car they were in. In fact, four of the five occupants were killed along with a passenger in the DWI driver's truck (unfortunately, not the DWI driver, but he got 60 years for four intoxication manslaughter convictions). People driving while texting (among other distracting activities) are as dangerous to others on the road as those who drive while intoxicated. That's a proven FACT. So I take ANY kind of distracted driving very seriously. It takes only a few seconds of distraction to cause a lifetime of misery (or worse, take someone's life). JUST DON'T DO IT!

I was sitting along the shoulder of the x-way with car trouble when I was 19, a drunk thought I was another lane and they estimated him doing 85 when he rear ended me (saw it coming, helpless). I have had a headache everyday since with many neck issues, it is the reason for my nickname Pounder. I have little patience for many things because of this, lost jobs, my wife and girl friends because I had no patience. Since being retired, i cope much better without stress of work. This is why I have little patience for dumb as* people who don't realize how they can affect someone else's life !!!!

Instead of talking down to me, educate me. Where is what you're claiming written into the law?

http://www.txdot.gov/driver/share-road/distracted.html

I can find info on a campaign to stop it, but I can't find anything stating where you can be cited for it in Houston. "Because you told me so" doesn't count, I want to see actual first hand info to support what you're saying.

I use the term "distracted driving" to encompass a broad set of activities that cause drivers to lose concentration on what they should be doing behind the wheel (i.e., responsibly driving their vehicle). The list in that link you provided is just some of the activities that a driver can be cited for if witnessed by a cop, and there are others. The fact that those activities are listed by the state should indicate to you that there really are state statutes governing said activities while behind the wheel. I'm not going to take the time to look them up for you and provide cites. If you don't want to believe me, that's your prerogative. Just be aware that "distracted driving" is illegal in TX (as it is in most if not all other states), and you can be cited for it (actually, the citation will be specific as to what you were doing, like watching a video, which is not allowed to play within eyesight of the driver), whether you're in Houston or anywhere else in the state.

Obviously you have never been in a big city where the sidewalks are full of people walking and texting.
People walk into light poles, fall into water fountains in parks, step off of curbs and get hit by vehicles, fall down flights of stairs, and these are just a few of the jerks walking and texting.
The list is long, so yes I am very serious.

Still stretching?

I'm going to try to get this through to you but I already know I'm wasting my time. While doing stupid things behind the wheel of a car can be a ticket-able offence (putting on make up, reading a paper etc) where I live cell phones have their own law. If at anytime you are found with a mobile device in your hand to .....check the time, see battery level or talk or text, it's an offence. There is no law here that equates a hamburger with a cell phone. It is 100 % legal to drive and eat.

Now if you act like a window lickin' crayon eater while your hand is in a box of fries, then yes, a distracted driving ticket could be issued.

But the act of eating and driving is not illegal, no matter how upset that makes you.

Good night and good bye
