Referencing this article, I got a kick out of the writer's quote about two kinds of C5's. I would like to add a few minor tid bits just for grins. 1. The column clamshell has hidden pass-through locking tabs, that I tediously disengaged by spraying silicone in the clamshell seams and prying with a tiny flat blade screwdriver (find a pee wee mirror to see what your up against). Starting at six o'clock low to the column, pop these hidden tabs, working away from the open slot and going back uphill on each side. So who sells a tool for this purpose? 2. The four 8mm bolts holding the styrafoam lower column cover are easily accessed through the provided 1/2" holes by using a 1/4" drive, five inch extention and ratchet. 3. Verify your cigarette lighter works (sees 12 volts) before you use your plug in jumper (in the spirit of testing your test light first). 4. An "hour" to do this and reassemble. Someone's pulling my third member! P.S. On my C5, a few (key on) taps to the lock housing was like saying "open sesame"! May the force be with you.

OK I have read 30+ pages of this and haven't found the easy answer to my question: I have had the GM fix done in Oct of 2007. Is there any benefit to the CLB now? Should I just wait until I have a tune and have the tuner reset the fuel shutoff? Thanks guys, Dave
Thanks 8Vette7 for the info. I do have the column lock removed. Maybe I'll just wait to find someone with an HP tuner to take care of the fuel shut off. Do you know if the HP Tuner can take care of the pull key wait 10 seconds message? If thats the only reason to install a CLB that seems a little overkill. I agree this should be something GM handles.

HP Tuner cannot remove that message, and from what I understand the CLB will not remove it either. It will require a hardware fix of some sort.
If it works fine right now with the CLB installed, just drive it and enjoy it. If you have any intermittent column lock error messages after installing your CLB, then you should tackle the extra relay. No damage will occur the way it is right now. If you prefer to do the other relay bypass, you can email me at cscokd@gmail.com and I'll send you instructions with pics.
Cheers,
John
John would you mind sending me the instructions.Post #614 and 615 look and sound exactly like what I'm up against and nobody responded to my post. Thanks for the help in advance!! Bill
I'm new here, just had my car for about a month now. Three days after getting it home, I drive it to work and I get the "pull key wait ten secs." followed by the "service column lock" and the the fuel shut off when I try to leave. The car is a 98 A4 with the recall done (lock removed, k harness). So after spending the afternoon reading this thread I realize I can just remove the k harness. It works!!! Great! No messages. Now 3 weeks later Im at the bank, go to leave "pull key...",
"service column" fuel shuts off. So now what is going to fix it? replace k harness? clb? tune to raise the fuel shut off to 200? Any help would be greatly appreciated as my car is still sitting in the bank parking lot.
Well after spending the evening re-reading this whole thread and trying somethings out on the car, I've come to realize that a new k harness or CLB won't work since it is in the LOCKED position. Also now when I insert/ remove key there is no noise, which I take means that the actuator isn't working. So my question now is how do I get it unlocked? Do I need a new actuator? Or is my best option to send in my pcm to get tuned to raise the fuel shut off? Or is there another way, I read about someone pushing the pin in when they insert the key.
Q For MN6/M12 cars what can I do if this situation occurs?
A Go into your passenger footwell. Remove your BCM and locate the recall mod relay, remove it and add a jumper wire between the white wire (pin 30) and the orange wire (pin 87). Note that there are two orange wires, so make sure you get the right one!
this advice just SAVED MY ***. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Colin do you have any pictures of the relay and where to jump these wires???

I have this same situation with my 2000 Vert... If you can post pictures that would be very helpful.
We need to start a class action lawsuit against GM. This is clearly a manufacturing failure that has not been managed properly. I was considering a c6 zo6. No way now.

I had the recall "fix" completed on my '98 A4 but due to a low battery start this morning, I got the dreaded "Service Column Lock". After charging my battery and clearing my codes, it still would not unlock. I contacted my trusted Chevy know-it-all and was told to turn the key to the "on" position and to jar the steering wheel left and right just before it starts the gauge sweeps, which helps release the locking pin. Well it worked. Now I'm not sure if I should go the CLB route or not.
Also found out that GM will not warranty any column lock issues pre-2003, they are only going back 5 years.
well... it's in the footwell, just above the BCM computer. There's 2 in there, it's the one on the right. There's about 5 wires coming out of it; 2 orange, 1 white, 1 purple, and 1 green. I wasn't exactly sure i had the right one but **** it the car'd been sitting for over a month not exceeding 2mph haha... i was desperate. Anyway I jumped the pins per Cscokd's instruction (thanks dude!!) and it's fixed... no codes, faults, errors.
My car is a 2003, by the way. Never been in for recall work, so the relay was factory installed. I've had a CLB in for the past 3 years. I guess the relay went bad?
I tell you, having the car hotwired (heh) like this gives me good peace of mind on its reliability. I wouldn't trust anything GM did to keep working.

Go figure my tuner was just in adjusting some parameters, so he missed the opportunity to take the dealers re-program back out. Ill just throw the CLB on and see what happens.
So my 2000 MN6 has the CLB installed. It has been working flawlessly for years. But now I'm getting the "Service Column" message and the car won't exceed 2MPH without fuel being disabled. Of course the wheel doesn't lock because of the CLB installed.
I've never had the dealer touch the car do to the fact I have a custom tune. Has anyone else gone down this road and if so how did you solve the problem?
quick question, I read the sticky but didn't see this exact symptom? My cousin's 02 manual is displaying service column lock, the steering wheel is locked but the car starts and can idle, is it supposed to be able to run? The car has had the recall which I am reading does nothing, so he basically has to get it towed? any input would be great right now.
