What turns on the sensor
The sensor doesn't read until the car is about 20 mph. Is there a switch in the sensor or is this just in the car's program. The reason for asking ,, is,, are the batteries on all the time much like a computer,, or do they turn on only while driving.
I will be changing tires w/in the next year and have to change the bat's in the sensors,, now approaching 7 years old. Just might do it myself. Thanks for the great info.. 99 Nassau Blue.

I`m Guessing here, since I`ve not found a Schematic for the sensor...To conserve batteries, I believe the sensors come to life at tire rotation.

Excellent Thread.
For attaching the battery to the metal clip, I wonder if this product
would work...http://www.frostfighter.com/ff_pdt_2000.htm.
I used it to reattach my defroster clip after it broke off. Good for
applications where the intense heat of a soldering iron might damage
the surrounding area. It's a 2-part mixture of adhesive and liquid
silver which conducts electricity. Dries as sturdy as a soldered piece.

Anymore info on this? Esp of the DigiKey battery? I wonder if there is a kit you can buy to "weld" those straps onto the battery without destroying it.
I just got Y2K chromies, and am going to transfer over my tires and sensors. But seeing as how my car is a 1998, with 85K miles on the original sensors, I'm betting they will die sometime this year, so now would be the opportune time to change them out.
In the meantime, I'll dismount my tires, yank the sensors and them mount my snow tires back on my car temporarily. Isnt there an O ring that should be replaced on the sensor?
Also, any other recommendations on the Potting material? JB weld is a little too permanent for me.

A few drops of Nitric on the mold just above the battery should open up a nice hole if you have any of that laying around That's what we use to 'decap' our ICs.

The o-rings are standard hardware store items, not positive about the size, but Corvettes of Houston just gave me four though I was buying my tires from discount. Do a search...

GM does make an actual o-ring for the old sensors. Most dealers don't even stock them becuase of the "corvette factor" in their pricing. One O-ring from a dealer is about $2. The exact same thing from a hardware store is about $.05. I replaced the O-rings when I swapped wheels. The dealer didn't have 4 in stock. I whined to the parts guy so he went back into the garage and pulled four plain O-rings from their shop supplies and gave them to me for free!

Tire Sensors
I had three of four working and tried to retrain. Now I have the left front and that is it. No XXX, just nothing. Is that the batt or what. I have not changed them but why did they work before?

Sounds like there not training. I would use a different magnet and keep trying.
